Is there really no way I can add river fields to a savegame?

I know this has been discussed before, and I know rivers only can be added in the map editor and not in the in-game terrain editor. But I need to make more rivers, without losing the things I've already made on the map.
Is there really no way?
What about that hex editing I've heard som much about, can it help me?
