Hey guys. Haven't played CivIII in quite some time but I recently reinstalled it and fired up a new game last week. I'm playing as Persia and I got beat out by the Mongols to the nearest 'iron'. Later I discovered a new source on a small island just to the north where I built the town of Samaria (see picture).

I finished the harbor in Samaria several turns ago (and already had one in Sidon as well) but I still cannot get any of my mainland cities to build Pikemen or Immortals.

Am I forgetting an important step here or is there a glitch in my game? It's been about 6 months since I last played but from what I remember the harbors connecting the two continents was the key to bringing resources from one to the other. Any help is greatly appreciated.

No glitch - you can't ship things over sea tiles until Astronomy unless you have the Great Lighthouse. You need either a land route or a route on coastal tiles.

No not a glitch :) You need astronomy to connect sea tiles and navigation for ocean tiles(you might need a ROP with Mongolia when you get astronomy though).

What a slow typer I am :(

Your 3 movement galley may be able to safely cross that 1 tile gab, but as long as it can't safely wait a turn in that gab, it doesn't count for trade routs.

But you should explore the coast past Sidon better. It looks like e.g. Mandalgovi is on the same continent as your core. Then as long as you have peace with the intervening civs, you can run a trade route through their coastal waters and the iron will hook.

Thanks for all of the quick replies guys. I didn't think it was a glitch, but I thought so long as you had the harbors all was good. I got beat out by the Mongols for that iron near Kazan by 2 or 3 turns so instead of fighting for it I grabbed the one on the island. Don't think I can take on the Mongols right now thought with just my archers (against their pikemen). Looks like I'll be the first to gunpowder in 30 or so more turns so hopefully nobody comes after me before then.

Thanks again for the info on the trade routes. BTW, could I trade that iron to someone else seeing as that it's pretty much going unused right now?

Yes tasselhoff is right; resourses need to be connected to your capital in order to be traded.
Trading iron or any other strategic resourse is not a great idea anyway. There is nothing worse than fighting units built with your resourses.
