Islands Help MP

It seems like when I play a game of archipelago or any islands map I always have trouble with like -17 gold and 6 unhappiness. Is there a strategy for preventing this in an Island game. Maybe just go with 2 cities until you are more established?

don't expand too much and beeline for (iron working after philosophy) compass, navigation. It's good to place 2nd/3rd city on top of 6 irons.
