I am a Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri player but I also play and have Civilization 3 and the two expansions. What if Firaxis would release a new expansion for Civ3 which would be the add-on of Alpha Centauri making one seamless game?

Could you imagine starting out a small civilization located on the earth than building it into an empire than building the rocket that takes you to Alpha Centauri ware you enter into an all new situation. You would pick up the story of Alpha Centauri and it factions being formed. What an epic game this would be. The possibilities are limitless. There would no turn base game like it. And at long last there would be a uniting of Civilization and Alpha Centauri.

This has been proposed before, however, the games are too different to go right from one to the other (except by a player who has both games, and does essentially the same thing on his own). Also there are those who wouldn't want to play a SMAC game after a Civ III game, and those who would like to skip the Civ III building for their SMAC game. I can understand a "Sid Meier Civilization and Alpha Centari" pack, but I don't think they should be joined as 1 program.

Both games are in essence the same type - start with a few units and build an empire. So, I don't see the draw to doing both in succession.

I liked Civ3, so I thought I would like SMAC to... nope... I hated it...I thought it was an awful game.

I do believe the universe owes me a SMAC2!

Failing that, what could be cool would be a Alpha Centauri expansion pack for Civ3. While it would have some of the more distinguishing features of SMAC - unit workshop (which I hated), social engineering (which I loved), and so on - it could surely have much SMAC feel, esp if they took the trouble to implement Psi combat, which I guess shouldn't be much harder than the changes they made in C3C.

Hm, to my knowledge, no-ones made a SMAC mod for CivIII. That's almost odd ...

That'll prolly be the reason then... I played Civ3 before I played SMAC...

I'd love a new version of SMAC, but IIRC Sid already said he had no intention of remaking it. However, I'm not sure about that, I hope the person I heard that from is wrong.

Maybe we should start a petition......

I just got SMAC + SMAC:Alien Crossfire (and 3 other games) for $20 at Wal-Mart. I heard so many people saying how good SMAC was, that I thought I would like it too. I haven't played it much, but I'm not liking it either. I think the graphics are the main thing that is turning me off (because it is an old game).

It does have a few of the same concepts as Civ3 so someone without an instruction manual (like me) isn't too lost.

Yeah... I guess playing Civ3 and then switching to SCAM makes the latter seem worst. Oh well... Civ3 will hopefully always be the best ;).

Also, I traded my copy of SMAC in for something else... So I no longer have it to play. (which I thouht was a good choice)

I think what the author of this thread meant was....

You could have a new age after the Modern times on civ 3.After the modern times you could enter the space age. Only when you have total world domination of your planet will a new version of SMAC kick in. Once the whole world is untied you can venture into space and colonizes a small part of that planet(AC).

On the planet you would meet the bickering aliens of that planet. They will be hot resistance to your presence on the new planet so you would have to think fast, in order to serve.

This is going on a bit, but I was thinking after you have conquered a few planets there would be like solar system emperies and wars would be like fought on the scale of "star wars"

...Ah well just my imagination. :crazyeye:

I like Civ3 for one main reason... It's realistic.. If they implement this I would no longer be a Civ3 fan.

kinda off topic, but a good FYI...

Many SMAC fans played the game and hated it. It seems like you have to force yourself to play through about 2 games to get the feel for how it works. After this, you will likely find you enjoy the game. It is just VERY different from Civ 2 & Civ 3 and really takes a while to get used to.

And yes, it is getting old and out of date, and the graphics are a but annoying, but they do add to the feel of the game (when you get used to it).

Now back to the actual tread topic...

Bamspeedy nailed it! I bought SMAC on Amazon, played for a month, then got rid of it via eBay. The graphics were just too awful when compared against CIV III. I had a hard time trying to figure out what I was looking at and where all my units were. The CIV III screens and 3D graphics are much easier on the eyes.

What's funny is that SMAC graphics resemble those ol' CIV II graphics. How spoiled we are by CIV III. :)

I would buy and try SMAC II.

SMAC gameplay was superior to CIV3.
CIV3 was too unpolished, cheating AI.
if there is a SMAC2, it would slap CIV3 around... :p

Civ3 *realistic?*

Hehe... The Americans vs the Babylonians, 3000 BC...

China builds the Statue of Zeus...

A squad of Spearmen take out a squad of Tanks...

Riiiight.... :)

PS I love the game... including the delightful suspension of disbelief aspect of it...

Alpha Centauri may have been the best thing after Civ2, but it has since been obsoleted. I for one would hate tobacktrack. They would have to do a LOT of improvements for me to want to play that again, even if it's a Alpha Centauri 2. I just don't see how they could make it better than Civ3. I'd rather have a Civ4 and see the Alpha Centauri project die. I enjoyed it once, but I just don't see how they could improve upon it effectively.
