Join the infernals? But I beat them.

What's going on here? I took out the Infernal capitol, most likely the site of the Ashen Veil, taking no losses. But afterwards I got three copies of the message saying that some of my units had been taken to serve the infernal lords, or something like that. What units? Why were they taken? What can I do about it? (BTW, I built the Mercurian gate and have them as allies.)

Did you take the Infernal out of the game entirely? If so, then that message should be removed at that point, a bug I'd call it.

The way it works is that if an "evil" unit dies, the Infernals get a mane unit, whether that unit's player liked the Infernals or not.
For this purpose, and evil unit is one that has Octopus Overlords or Ashen Veil religious promotions (random given out to units built in cities with one of those religions) or spell casters with certain sphere promotions, death and entropy I think.

I'm playing Infernals in my current game and almost every civ is good and neutral, except Perpentach. So my cities cant grow, I really hate that function. I'm killing killing and killing, and all I get is an empowered Basium.

I've found that slaughtering the followers of the OO and pretty much any evil civs is generally good practice. Hm... aren't the barbarians also counted as evil?

they're only counted as evil if they are AV or OO followers, or have certain promotions like Stigmata, Unholy Taint, Prophecy Mark, Death (I, II, or III), or Entropy (I, II, or III)

Also the unit must be a living unit, undead, demons, and angels won't pass over in the afterlife

OK, I knocked out another Infernal city. This one only had three guards but I got four copies of the message. By now, I ought to have lost seven units, but as far as I can tell, everyone's OK. One more city to go and they'll be out. I'm sure those lazy-ass Mercurians will be happy about it.

I'm referring to razing their cities, though. Don't cities owned by evil players generate more manes and less angels than other cities when razed?

Well, its done. That last city had some really scary stuff in it, and my fireballs did not do any good. But sacrificing a few lesser units finally wore them down and I razed the last of the Infernal cities and said goodbye to big bad. This time, no units were 'taken'. Now it's time to do something about that smirking clown...

It really doesn't make sense that the infernals should have a reason to attack people of their own alignment. As it is it seems too tempting by far.

You do realise that Hyborem is evil incarnate, right? Slaughtering his erstwhile allies seems completely in character to me.

True, true.

"You in da way!"

In situations like these I found that having a city pump out savants to suicide themselves against is a good way to continue having your cities grow. Each dead savant (since they are living) is usually good for a mane or two.

Look on it from other side. Hyborem might not see difference between killing good or evil, in fact killing fellow evils might be more tempting to him, but if you look it from other side, fellow Veils will probably be his allies while good civs will do whatever they can to stop spreading of hell and Armageddon from comming, and therefore attack Hyborem.

Back to the OP: it is probably from razing the city. When you raze an evil city, some of the population is converted to manes. The message is generic though: saying that "your" units have joined... blah, blah, blah... That would explain why the last city didn't give you the message, since Hyborem is gone at that point.

It probably should exclude Infernal cities though, still sounds like a bug.

It says "your units" cause the city is "yours" before it is actually razed.

if i want to power up hyyborem i have a city with thet soulforge and a demons altar and constantly build ritualists ad promplty sacrifice them to give me research and two manes to hyborem (because of the entrophy promotion and the sashten veil promotion). i keep thinking of how painfull it must be to have your soul split up into 2,000 pieces and have each of those go to hell
