The feel of the game did it for me. Civ 2,3 give the feeling that you're another cog in the civ universe, but the first made you feel as if you were a god, controlling your own little civ in it's own little civ world.
Sounds strange? Not really. As a player, you knew that you were smarter than other civs and could dominate them. Therefore the game, though challenging, would be rewarding if you put the neccessary time into it.
All this with beautiful graphics (mac version) for $40 in 1994. It's the reason why I keep my little POS Mac around.
