what does the number at the top of the screen next to every player listing mean in a lan game?

i think the one you are refering to is the player scores.

thats what i thought,im just wondering what are the best ways for raising them, i cant seem to get ahead of the other players, is the best way to have high culture or to take over other civs or..?

i've never played civ multiplayer so i was just wondering how long multiplayer games usually last?
