LAN problems

Ok my system crashed and I had to dump EVERYTHING..............and I have no clue how to set this up.

Ok I want to hook my computer via wireless to my bro's computer via wireless and be able to play civ 3 against each other..................ok how do I set it up?

I have a wireless dsl modem which can be used as a router but I don't wanna dink with it......so how can I play civ 3 against my bro......can I use ad-hoc mode and how do I set it up?

sorry but my comp crashed and I have lost all knowledge on how to set it up

so please be nice and post steps on how to set-it up via ad-hoc to play Civ 3 against each other

I don't know much about wireless, but we can consider generic network issues:

1. First, make sure drivers for your network adapter are installed
2. Are the LAN IP addresses Static or Dynamic?
3. Do the computers share the same Subnetmask?
4. Can you PING your brothers computer?

If you don't know the answer to any of the above, then ask for more detail.

Assuming your network worked before you lost everything: This will mostly involve looking at the settings on your brother's computer, and using those to determine what the settings should be on your own computer.

If your network never worked, now is the time to admit it...

Does your computer connect fine to the router via non-wireless?
Does your brother's computer connect at all via wireless?

If only your computer had to get reset, the network should be working the same as before between your brother's computer and the router, since all the settings should be stored on either his computer or the router. Regardless, I rarely try to troubleshoot small wireless networks, since it can be more trouble than it's worth. Usually I'll just reset the router to it's factory defaults and set everything up again from there.

No th router/DSL modem crashed.......but I don't like to use the DSL modem for a Router but I can try........stormbind I'm sorry this is a little confusing....I have never been able to PING my bros computer......

The only thing our network could do was exchange files thats it....I didn't set it up our family techie friend came over and did it.......but Stormbind could you explain this easier cuz I'm new to most of the computer language..I know some but not the whole thing..
