Lancers wouldn't be a bad army if they didn't come along so late.

We've got this charging super knight who's entering the game when? Oh yeah. Later than Muskets!!!!

Could perhaps Muskets and Lancers trade places?

A later introduction time for Muskets would also make Long Swords a whole lot more useful. As it stands, there's just this slim window for Long Swords before you can not only build something better - but you don't even need iron.

I think they should introduce a dragoon unit with gunpowder, and have the lancer be a counter to that.

When I'm playing lancers tend to come soon after radio, and cavalry come well after infantry. Usually the enemy has units that can counter these things by the time I can get them... I agree with both of these points, although, I never use these units, so who knows. They could theoretically be amazing if they didn't look so bad to me.

I use lancers as a slightly cheaper high-movement alternative to cavalry for running into cities. Then they turn into anti-tank guns and I regret not spending the bit of extra gold or hammers for something that turns into a tank.

The difficulty (for want of a better word) seems that advanced units come before basic technologies in other eras are researched- it is usual for me to get Gatling guns before muskets.

Maybe there should be a bottle neck in that you need to fill out an early era before proceeding. (shrugs- not sure).
