Late game crashes

..kinda reposting this from the other forum.

Epic speed, standard size map and I'm currently in the year, errr... 1901? 1908? Something like that.

I was in the middle of clearing a barb-encampment when the game jumped to my next unit that needed orders and CTDed on me. I got the standard crash-dialogue from Windows, btw.

Loaded up an autosave that was made a couple of turns before the initial crash, but it crashed again - this time on an earlier turn.

The only parallel behavior that I could see was that the game crashed while auto-switching to a tank.

From what I could google, it looks like quite a few people are having crashes in the late game, but all the ones I could find on reddit and the steam forums describe that the game will quit either when they conquer a city or when they push the "next turn"-button.

I've attached the auto-save in question. Would be interesting to see if it will run on someone- else's computer without CTDing.

This has been happening to me as well. After 5 days of 2k troubleshooting my computer, they said the developers have been made aware and are working on a fix. If it helps, I've confirmed in my own game that it has nothing to do with being at war, game speed, or map size.

Update: I've managed to actually finish that game. I'm not sure how or why it didn't crash on my fourth or fifth attempt to continue, but I did put all my tanks to sleep for a couple of turns (so that the game couldn't auto-switch to them during my movement-phase). No idea if that's really what cured it but I did eventually continue from that save and went on to win the game.

And another update:

Game seems to be prone to crashing from turn 390 on (epic). I've had these kind of crashes in two games now.

This latest one even has reproducible behavior.

The game crashed on me the first time when:

1. I finished researching Mobilization, giving me the tech-popup and an advisor-update about army-corps'.
2. After the tech-popup and advisor tip, the game tried to jump to a trader who had just finished his route. Game froze on the "make a route"-screen and CTDed without even a Windows error message.

I reloaded a save-game and switched my civ-research to something else, to avoid getting the popup/advisor tip. This time the game jumped to the trader without a problem and I could continue.

I quick-saved on every turn now, btw.

After one more turn I switched civic-research back to Mobilization to get it done. Little did I know that on the next turn *another* trader would become free. This resulted in the exact same behavior, leading to another crash (but on a later turn and *after* the turn my game crashed initially). Tech-/advisor popups play fine, once I close both of them the game tries to jump to the free trader and crashes.

EDIT: I forgot one crucial step which I *think* is the trigger for the crash. It wasn't the advisor/tech-popup but rather the fact that I clicked on "change policies" from the popup and changed a civic around. The game calculating the effect of my new policy is what seems to be causing the trouble. I avoided this procedure and eventually did manage to finish the game.

Update on the update:

This behavior seems definitely linked to switching policies for me.

In my current game it happened at lot later than usual (400+ turns), but the symptoms are generally the same:

1. Late game
2. Lots of cities in my empire, lots of units on the map
3. I switch out policies and while the game is calculating the effects of that switch, it'll crash. This "moment of silence" starts to become noticeable in the mid-game. Early on, it's hardly noticeably and gets longer and longer the bigger my empire gets and the more calculations need to be done.
4. Policies that have "broader consequences" (like multiple boost to trade-routes while I'm running 10 or 12 traders) seem to be more likely to trigger the crash.

I suspect this problem might be related to my hardware, since I only have 8 GB of RAM in my system.

EDIT: The crash seems to happen *only* when I click on "change policies" on the Civic-popup, change my government and then confirm the changes. When I close the pop-up(s), do all the other stuff I want to do during the turn and *then* click on the government-button to change policies, there is a slight hiccup (long-ish during late game) upon government-change-confirmation, but the game will keep running.

The game crashes back to desktop when i end turn in this game (Turn 221 - Quick - Huge).

I tried letting every unit sleep during this turn but it crashes anyway.

See here for more reports and speculation on reported bug:
Luckily, I haven't experienced that one yet. All my late-game crashes happen during *my* turn, not the AI's.

I wonder if that crash described in the other thread might be hardware-/RAM-related - but OTOH, my system isn't exactly brand new (i5 4670K, 8 GB DDR3, GTX 660, Win10).

2K support responded with a possible workaround: "check to see during who;s AI turn the crash happes. reload game and declare war on that AI". it doesn;t work for me. maybe someone else try it?
