Legendary Siege of Berlin 1260 AD

Initially, I think it would ruin the game if we continued with a strategy some of us think is wrong, especially as "River Defense" is one of the main game rules, and should not be confused with cheating of any kind. Keshik has been researched exhaustively, and it has NO amphibious properties.

I suggest a new poll should be in place, ranking all options neutrally, not selectively.

Here is the map

Berlin_2.JPG

1. We are moving two axemen onto the foodplain NW of Berlin turn 1 (GREEN)
2. The initial Keshik attack has 30 % chance of success, which is facts we can extrapolate from the gamerules themselves and odds calculators.(PINK)
3 The proposed secondary attack by the keshik across the bridge has variable chances of success, depending on the outcome of a first battle. (RED)
4. We could move the keshiks across the river, scouting later to the East on the Golden hill (Yellow)
5. The Elephant Königstramper (Combat 2) may attack the ministack NW of Berlin (BLUE)
6. This is anticipated, as we want to stop the elephant, something we do with the spearmen "Trunketeers" (WHITE)

Inside Berlin, we can find 1 Triple Defense Longbowmen, 1 Spearmen with City Attack and Combat 1 and 1 Spearmen with no promotions at all.
These are "Reichstag SS", "Sturmkameraden" and "Volkssturm".

I am looking up a battle odds calculator, for future reference, something we badly need here.

Eureka, I found the Ultimate CIV 4 Battle Calculator, never again will such idiotic "citizens inputs" go unchecked past our beloved Battle Calculator.

CIV 4 BATTLE CALCULATOR

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/proc/civ4/combat_calc.htm

31.4 % odds for crossing rivers for the healthy Keshik (Combat/Formation bonus)
4.2 % odds for the other battered Keshik attacking first.

Another scenario is how much will statistically be left of the longbowman, if the healthy keshik strikes first.

The Longbowman, if surviving, will have on the average 2.9 health left.
For the counter, even refreshed with the Combat 3 Promotion, we only get 43.4 % chance, as seen below. I have now laid out the battle calculator, and no one can ever again use our "legislature" to prevent sound and informed game decisions by spuriously calling knowing game-technical rules for illegal.

The insistence on river penalty's being a sinister legal game secret is from this point onwards utterly revoked, thanks to the BATTLE CALCULATOR.

I would also like to create an awareness of a bug in Civ4 for the river attack penalty. When the Keshik places the destination at the longbowman, across the river, and attacks, we get 67 % odds. Moving tile by tile, we only get 29.3 %, with the same unit. This is a bug, and we know about, and we exploit it.

This is why attacking with the 1st keshik makes sense, but with the second not.

No, it's not a bug -- you yourself pointed out (in another thread) that attacking 2 squares with a mounted unit is a "charge" attack, which is not subject to river penalty. It even makes sense from a real-world perspective -- the horses at full speed are not impeded by the (presumably shallow) river or by running across the bridge, in a way that foot units would be. :D

Fun part is, River Bug in Poland is one of their biggest rivers.

But it is a bug, we can call it a charge to make ourselves feel good, but it is really a bug. Horses do not use several 100 miles to run up a speed to cross a river or bridge. For some reason, I think the programming takes into account bordering tiles of the attacking unit, which explains the game dynamic.

And since it is a bug that is part of the game, and even though it is unrealistic, it is a game rule we abide by. Good we figured that out.

I think we should contact Firaxis directly, and see what they think about this curious paradox. I would like a patch.

Update, I contacted Firaxis and reported this doubletile river-penalty ignoring bug. I hate "unrealistic" bugs that counters my intuitive grasp of concepts. The ignoring of the river penalty cost me headaches, which is why the concept has to die.
