Legions near other civs!

I downloaded the game and took it home last night to investigate the science situation (a poll will be forthcoming). While poking about in the game, I was trying to get a better feel for what cities were supporting what units as there has been some discussion of re-homing. From the city info screen one can click on a supported unit and find its location, both in map coordinates and what city it is nearest too. Imagine my surprise and excitement when both Legions were reported to be near rival civs (two different civs!). My steel sieve of a memory  has now forgotten which two civs, but the important point is that they are there, and we are fairly close. This will have many implications for exploring, among other things.

Hey! That's a great discovery! I didn't realise you could do that!

I think we should go and explore and find who we're dealing with. Maybe they would have been silly enough to leave an unguarded city nearby.

I've just had a look:

The northern legion, supported by RC is near Uppsala. I believe this is a second or third city.

The western legion, supported by TF is near Bombay, also a second city.

I, too, think we should pay this new neighbors a friendly visit and see if we can help them garrison any undefended cities :satan: Of course, we'll need to take a large contingent of forces to properly help them :groucho:

So the Legions should continue to explore but do we want them to focus on the same civ to increase our chances of being able to capture a city?

I think they should both continue exploring towards both civs, but perhaps move the chariots over to provide support? I'd like to know where they both are; focussing on one might miss a good opportunity against another. We don't have a way at this point to know which is closest, do we? Legions are fairly powerful units at this stage of the game, if handled carefully. We also need to make sure we get any huts that might be left between us.

One problem is that we could be close to their cities but they could still be on another continent...

I presume that the northern chariot is still closer to Dellham than to the other civs? This gives us a bit more info on how far away from the others we are - probably a good 8 or ten squares at least. They may yet be on another continent.

This again makes me want to hurry to build a SMC©

Super Military City.

:D

My guess would be they are on other continents, if the legions really are that close to other cities why didn't we meet any of their troops? AI loves to explore and I don' see why they wouldn't do that in this game.

Single Military City.

Eh, there appears to be a slight error in your acronym...

Psssst. Bye the way, the 1st S in SSC stands for Super, not Single...

;)

Great minds think alike. :D

Great Minds, if they are on another island, confirmed, then are we free to focus production on Settlers, Cities, and Roads? And both Wonders of course. We are already blessed with many units for exploration. If the enemy is a walk along a path, though...

I agree with Nemo, first that we need to *confirm* that they are on a different island/continent, and second that we are free to focus on settlers and wonders, keeping in mind the AI does land settlers by boat. We'll need to keep the coasts patrolled to ward off any encroachment on our continent.

Great job Leo! :goodjob:

I am very fond of this little loophole when exploring and I'm glad that someone used it here too. Whether the AI is on our continent or not shouldn't affect our growth for a long time, especially given that we can take them out with the forces we already have, if used properly. If they are overseas then we at least know they are close and can make a strike at them at the time of our choosing. :D
