Lethal strike on airplanes is insane and frankly its boring, is there anyway to disable it?

Yes, go to the editor and uncheck the lethal land and lethal sea bombardment flags under all the air units.
does it have to be a specific map/conquest or can I turn off lethal strike in civ3 all together? I dont play the conquests I dont find them all that fun. I find it much funner starting my own civ from scratch

Go to C:/Program Files/Infogrames Interactive/Civilization III/Conquests/ , and double like on the "conquests.biq" file. This is the ruleset that the game uses. Go to "Scenario -> Custom Rules", say yes to the popup, click "Rules -> Edit", go to the units tab, and uncheck (control+click) the "Lethal Bombard" flag for any unit that has it (if you need screenshots, I'll give them :) ).

lol damn you guys respond fast, thanks.

Also I get an error when i try to edit and save conquests.biq, it says "ERROR cannot save, conquests.biq is a read-only file"

I would save it as something else and instead of starting a regular game use the Civ-Content option and select the modified file.

Or I guess you can use windows and remove the read-only flag from the file. In that casse backup your orginal file.

Right click on the conquest.biq file, select properties, and then unselect the "read only" attribute.

Fighters sinking ships is reasonable, but bombers sinking them is unrealistic. I have all my fighters set to Lethal Sea and all bombers set to Lethal Land. This encourages the combined arms approach.
