Put simply - the Greeks have Refining, we don't. At this time, they won't even consider trading it to us.

Refining is key tech on our path to Motorized Transportation(aka Panzers). In fact, once we discover Steel, it is the next tech we must research to continue on that path.

For this reason, I think we should steal Refining from the Greeks rather than wasting the time to discover it ourselves. We have 7802g and can steal this tech safely and without incident for 4732g. That would still leave us with over 3000g, not the mention the nearly 1000gpt we are currently making.

In conclusion, we have the treasury for this mission and a definite need for the tech it would provide. The sooner we can build our Panzers, the sooner we can win this game.

What do you say, Fanatika?

I think it might even be cheaper to steal refining then to negotiate it. I say go for it.

I agree that we need caution, but our foreign relations couldn't be better with Greece and we can steal it safely without incedent, so I think we have an excellent chance to steal without incident.

Octavian(or anyone),

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't safely mean without incident?

There are three options for tech theft - immediately, carefully, and safely. The first two cost less but there is a risk of failure or getting caught. IIRC, spending the extra gold for the safe route will guarantee us the tech with no diplomatic damage.

I'm not completely sure that there is no chance for diplomatic harm: I had always worked under the assumption that no matter what, there was some sort of risk.

Then again, I may be wrong.

Me neither, Oct. :) I have grabbed techs before and left the "victim" smiling, so who knows?

Perhaps one of our citizens can enlighten us. I would hate to miss out on this opportunity.

Perhaps a citizen, or perhaps a governor. "Safely" just means that there is a very low chance of being discovered. This chance is even lower if you are good friends with the other civilization.

Has eyrei decided on a deputy? The turnchat is tonight! This would free up our steel for even more gpt. (potentially 200+gpt). But, if we fail, we lose 4,000g. It's not something I would like to try. I would however, be willing to try it on a, preferably, non-commercial civ. We are invading Babylon, and we NEED that gold for culture flips. I would not approve of stealing the tech now. Too expensive, and too risky.

I am concerned about risking war with one of the few allies we actually have to obtain this technology. Does anyone know for sure what the chances are of a failure? And beyond that the chance of an incident?
