I would like to see a few elements of the very near future created such as:

Something to do with alternative energy
Fusion plants (when fusion is researched)
Advanced robotics

Back in Civ. 2: Test of Time there was an extended original game where you could research into the future and build robots and genetically engineered units. You could even win by researching transendence.
Teleportation Centers could be a terrain improvement that allows units to transport anywhere on the map.
