I was wrong! I deleted my original text. I had forgotten to save the .bic file after I changed the AI to AI trade rate when I started the game.

I apologize to all, including Firaxis, for my mistake. The trade rate probably works they way it is supposed to!

if u have goody huts in ur map the expansionist civilisations will get techs and trade them away. besides, the rate is only one of the parameters. there is the question of how much. unless a lot of the civs are really weak in relation to the leaders, they always have enough to buy techs from each other. i don't think the 30% mark-up on deals applies while trading with each other.

Whatever you do, the AIs will trade tech 1:1 amongst themselves. So if one expansionist civ gets writing, another a different tech, they trade, then the tech gets very cheap because of that and another researches it and so on..... that's what happenes....

I'd like to hear from Firaxis how this works though....

The AI trade 1:1 among themshelves??? Man, that's not the correct expression. I think that: "The AI trades Today for me, tomorrow for you, forever againts the human scum" is much closer to reality than "1:1"

Oh yes it sure feels like that :D

I suppose that an AI civ might offer a "per turn" amount of gold to buy it. Unfortunately, the game does not allow you to see the deals the AI civs make with each other. I'll try to do some hacking to see if I can find where the per turn deals are stored in the saved file.

That's exactly what the AI does in more areas than just trading.

We said long ago with Civ 3 it is actually "The Human Against the World". And it sucks.

That's what I thought, but I can't prove it, and I'm not 100% sure. If this behaviour continues I'll go back to monach level. It may do the same things there, but on deity, every little detail is important to survival.

I took a hex editor to edit the .sav file and changed the rate back to 100, saved the file, and reloaded. Sure enough, after I did that, after the Aztecs discovered philosophy they were the only civ to have it on the next turn! So looks like the editor heuristic "AI to AI trade rate" works (and the problem with trade rate was entirely my fault). They still don't like my maps, probably because they have so many warriors staggering around, but just wait till I start exploring the seas....

Well, here is another case of a player's imagination about "AI cheating" jumping to an incorrect conclusion. I'll be more thoughtful in the future, and I recommend that everybody else will do the same. Let the evidence, rather than out imaginations, convince us how the game really works.
