Line drawing problem

Whenever I play an MP game with a friend of mine, any time either of us attempt to draw lines on the map the game disconnects. Whoevers hosting can save the game at that point, rehost, and we can play from that point on seeing the lines drawn by the host, but as soon as more are drawn it will disconnect once again.

So far to fix it we've tried new installs of civ, reformatting our computers and reinstalling civ, running civ with no mods or edits to the ini files, and playing without a firewall incase it's a port issue.

The only fix we've found is for both of us to connect to our modems directly, not using our routers. Running in the DMZ on the router doesn't work. This is less than ideal as it involves shutting down our networks to play.

Does anyone have some ideas to fix this?

I don't know why it should disconnect when you draw lines but it would seem like you are having NAT and DHCP issues because of it

I am assuming your computer is configured to receive an IP address automatically and the router is performing the DHCP role.
By connecting directly to the modem, regardless of how your local area connection is configured, your machine will receive what is effectively a static internal IP address as it is the only machine connected to the modem.
So I would reproduce that on the router by giving your computer a reservation in DHCP. This will mean your machine will always be issued the same internal IP address as its on a permanent address lease. This should also mean you can use the DMZ function.
To do that access the routers firmware using the web interface, identify your computers mac address and reserve an IP address for it.
