I'm about to buy a new computer, and I've heard that Vista is horrible and Linux is pretty user-friendly now.
Will Civ IV work on Linux?

There are civ4 versions for Windows, and for Mac OS X. Some people have reported success running civ4windows through Wine / WineX though I myself haven't had that luck.

Civ4 is heavily dependant on directX, and as far as I know nobody has shown an interest in porting the game to Linux (as Loki - before their demise - was doing back in the days, bless them)

I've got a macbook now, and I have to say the Mac port is much slower than the Windows version, on the same machine. Sad, but that's the state of gaming these days huh. So I find myself booting XP once in a while to play a good game of Civ. It's good, it keeps me from getting addicted ;)

I run Vista and had near the problems one would expect from all the bashing it receives. I actually bought to computer primarily for Civ IV since I knew it wasn't going to run on my Windows ME machine.

You just have pretend that the Vista OS is a big brother who doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. :pat:

"This program may not have installed correctly" is just an opinion and the program always installs correctly. :wallbash:

"Cancel or Allow" Allow, why do you think I clicked on it. :gripe:

Otherwise I run CivIV without complaint...except for huge maps late in the game like everyone else without a customized muscle machine. :badcomp:

Do you think 2GHz of RAM is enough to run smoothly on a huge map late in the game?

Civ IV runs pretty decent on my Linux box using the Ubuntu distro and Cedega instead of Wine. There are other good distros out there but afaik Cedega is the only thing running Civ IV well.

Things to keep in mind:
- The initial learning curve for Linux is steeper dan say XP.
- I still have a small XP install just in case. Civ IV is on that XP install btw, from there it can be run from Linux.
- For reasonable performance I recommend to use low settings for graphics.

Good luck!

Since you already get a new computer, why not buy one with Vista pre-installed and check it out? If you don't like it download ubuntu and install it instead.

If you're building the computer yourself, things look a bit different of course.

Beam is right, Cedega 6.0 and Ubuntu Edgy or Feisty work Civ 4 and Warlords with only minor issues. (eg. Ctrl keys don't work, some 3rd party mods don't work). While Ubuntu is free, Cedega costs £5 per month but you only need download it once. It doesn't stop working after a month!

About the mods. I got them all working until now by installing them in XP. The issue sometimes is with the installer <> Cedega combo. Once installed in XP the mods I have run fine from Linux.

About Cedega. The fee is 5 euro/month for a minimum of three months. After that the version you have will be working as is, it's just support that stops.
