I'm getting a new computer and I want to see some numbers. Can anyone recommend free benchmarking software?

Are you looking to measure performance of specific components, such as memory bandwidth or harddrive write speeds, or general system performance?

3dmarks used to be the standard for general gaming performance, but they're essentially useless now, your best bet for gaming performance is to actually run some games, fire up fraps if you want to see fps.

Specific components. I want to get data on the performance of all parts. A single number is of no interest.

Sysoft Sandra should give you some CPU performance numbers. Otherwise, your best bet really is to fire up a game and run it. After all, benchmarks are synthetic. Some components might be optimized for them, thus giving you an inflated score.

Sandra is good for specific components, as is Everest. The full versions of neither are free though.

If you're looking for something for a specific component, you may be able to find something free for that. (ie. hdtach for hard drives)

If you just want the raw numbers, it's probably just as easy to simply check review sites for the pieces of hardware you've got, or the manufacturer's sites for CPUs, GPUs, etc.
