Hey all,

I'm pretty new to modern Civ, having not played it since the original up to III. Anyway, I've played four or five games so far, currently playing as Sumeria on King difficulty.

I'm finding that after the initial rush to get the basic tech research done (archers etc) and throwing out war-carts I'm getting totally lost in the tech tree by the middle of it. Everything seems like it should be a benefit and I blindly stumble through researching everything. On king, I still seem to stay ahead of the pack, but on higher difficulties I expect this might change. Is it expected that you'll research everything?

I know this will depend greatly on the civ and the victory conditions, but for Domination as a start, are there any tips as to which techs through the tree I should be focussing on/give the best benefits?

Many thanks

There are some "secrets" in the tech tree that are not shown. Most importantly for *any* civ are the techs that raise the production tile yield. Those are apprenticeship (+1 production all mines), machinery (lumbermills), industrialization (+1 production all mines), steel (+1 production lumbermills).

Apart from that, specifically for sumeria you might want to beeline knights & upgrade some of your warcarts.

Hey buddy, Maybe my guide will help you out! It's still in the works but there's tons of information there already

Usually the best options after you're done with the basic technologies is to rush straight for Military Science for Cavalry and Ballistics for Field Cannons.
Also getting Steel is amazingly powerful for taking down that era's cities :)

Good luck friend

Thanks for the tips and the guide, I'll take a look.

Just finished a domination run on King. Took around 310 turns so I'd like to bring that down. :)

Spawned pretty close to Scythia so got rid of those pretty quickly with warcarts and a couple slingers. The others took quite a while to mop up across continents.

I seem to be an overbuilder, so I'm going to try and reign in the building and work on expansion more.

Thanks

If you have iron, knights are usually very good for mid-game conquering. Just send a battering ram and/or a siege tower with them, to get rid of those annoying walls. A few crossbows will be needed behind them to a) Help getting rid of the enemy units outside the cities, and b) Being a bait for the city bombardment.
