Machine Guns or Infantry for stack defense?

Both. I always have a MG or two in my stack.

MG's are good as Medics as they cannot attack so you won't accidentally kill them :mischief: as I often do when i get sloppy. As mentioned they are also good to leave it the cities to defend until you clear out the area and have them rejoin the main force. If i'm doing a invasion with a few SoD's to blitzkrieg the enemy i usually have 1 per transport ( with my infantry) then some cavs or such for mopping up and attrition tactics if need be. Some of artillery but flight is usually right around the corner anyway! :goodjob:

No, that game was won a while ago. IIRC, I wound up losing half of my original invasion force, but after that the AI (Capac & Monty) had shot their bolt, and it was just a matter of mowing through their cities.

The safest thing to use as a medic is a scout or an explorer. They can never attack, you won't upgrade them to cavalry by mistake (as with a chariot) and if a scout/explorer is your stack defender....you are in serious trouble.

Unfortunately neither can get woodsman III :(. Although in many games I don't bother to try, making them pretty ideal. Maybe my #1 most frequent medic if I war in the early game is an axe though. It never gets upgraded, and other axes with combat/shock or even just combat will defend first. After maces come around the medic stays an axe...making it virtually impossible to lose without losing the whooooooole stack...and then any medic would have died.

Sometimes, MGs are awesome. The intercept helps with the airships, and if you're being attacked by anything but first-strike-immune units, a Drill IV MG can decimate entire stacks all by itself. I had a pair of MGs almost entirely by themselves destroy a Zulu invasion force. (Stupid AI, never brings enough siege.)

On the other hand, I once lost newly captured city defended by a dozen rifles and a half dozen machine guns to an Aztec SoD comprised mostly of knights and macemen. I was stunned, but then I realized that the Knights were each able to inflict a little bit of damage to the MGs, since they weren't gunned down by the first strikes.
