War is good, but if don't plan on beating the living S*** out of everyone, then make sure you are a man who keeps his word. Wage war but don't break your word. If you do this too often then nobody will trade with you as they will "remember your dishonesty". But I ususualy find myself at war. Usually with teh most agressive civs. In the current game i'm playing, the Dumb Aztecs are at war with the Yanks, and the Franks(French). I have one city inbetween the two. Instead of going around it, they go through it. Well i dont want the Aztecs to become too strong, so i give Lincon tech up to infantry, as he was hoplessly behind and i wanted to take him out (But i'd rather have him a neighbour, than have Montezuma a lot bigger) So i tell Monty to get out or declare war, he does it once. Then the Germans declare war. Then i tell him to get out again when he moves his guys in again, He has 3 people at war with him, He can go around this one tile, but instead he declares war. Needless to say i have his main production cities, and I am moving into his capitial in about 3 to 4 turns. Yet I am a bohemoth and i have an 86% approval rating and I have been at war with 3 of the 9 civs and i whiped out the Japanese, thus 4 wars and 4 civs.

So yeah, dont break your word unless you want to have to take everone out and quickly, otherwise you wont be able to get luxuries and techs easily.

War rocks, peace sucks  !!!!
I can't even believe somenone ever posted this poll. War is funny, productive, destroys undesirable AI scum and leads to quick victories!! what else could be better?

The only reason that I am at peace is because I am planning and preparing for my next war.

I, myself am pretty peaceful, but mark my word if you cross me I kill you five times before you hit the ground!!!!! Trully I love it when the AI goes to war and leaves me out, because I become the center of trade! I mean I get crap loads of cash coming from those warmongers!! Also I try as hard as possiable to become the strongest civ so I don't have to go to war with those idiots! It's funny how I'm the most peacful but one heck of a military muscle!! I just love taking advantage of civs at war for trade and fighting those who really tick me off. One thing I make sure of is that I stop the mindless brutallity before killing them so I don't get the bad name of a civ killer. I simple love being peaceful with a huge army twice the size of my enemies and all the luxeryresources to trade with civs at war while I'm at peace.

Also I must say this is a very good thread you made Gerard. Thank you!:goodjob:

Thank you, Zoke0. In fact my strategy agrees with yours, but, since one is in a forum, well, ask, reply and learn.
For my part one of the main things that I had to learn was: Civ resembles the real world, but it is not the real world.
It can seem stupid, but I know about a lot of people that - as I made - faces a computer game as if it was the real life but the AI not always (in fact hardly ever) works as the real world.
I tried to make a happy people, in constant growth and in peace with their neighbors. Then I received civil disorder, other civs that I had helped declared me the war...
Well, in the real world there are many countries that forget the help received yesterday and betray you today.... perhaps Civ do resembles the real world.

each civ plays differntly but depending on which civ you play will determine how much you war and if you want to keep your 20 turn peace treaty...

I have tried most victory strageties with the different civs.
For pure enjoyement, nothing beats my current game-- Zulu Breakout. The Zulus are overrunning the world through conquest.

This victory method leaves out some of the fine points of the game, though. Trying to get a cultural victory, especially a quick one, can be even more challenging.

War for fun.
Peace for challenge.

I tried so hard to play peacefully in civ3 but to no avail. I was able to do it in both the original civ and civ2. So now I've resorted to the warmongering way *sigh*

war is good for 1 reson in CIV3, to gain control of something (a good patch of land or a special resource). imo you must have a clearly defined objective... advanced till it is under your control and then stop make peace... and start looking for another target while you rebuild...

:D I find in Civ 3 ( i play as Germany and Russia) i just sit and wait for my special unit. I am fast at getting my special unit, so by the time i get a panzer or cossack, they have maybe at best a cavalry or musketmen. So i just commence in kicking their butt:goodjob:

I play the game to have fun in my own way, and for no other reason. I could care less if Person X has played a game and scored a bajillion points, good for him. That doesnt mean that I want to play the game for points. I play to have fun, simple as that.

I always try to go for peace. I like to envision myself as actually looking out for the people I rule over. (Hard to watch over little faces, but I digress...) I always try to maintain peace. Thats not to say that I let the AI walk all over me. If I see someone who is trying to grossly take advantage of me, and its clear to me that I can stomp their boootay, then of course I'll do it. However, I'm not someone who sits around and thinks, "Hmmm how can I kill every other Civ in this game?" I just dont play like that. I respect others boundaries, and I usually try for the Diplomatic or Space Race victory.

I've only won like 1 Conquest victory the whole time I've been playing Civ3 (been playing since the day it was released) and that was when I just felt like playing a viscious killer leader type, like Saddam Hussein or something, one day. I guess what it boils down to is I try to play the game somewhat like an RPG, and I almost always try to be a nice leader. :) In the modern era though, when I am ahead on tech and my economy can support it, I usually start a massive arms buildup, just as a deterrent. :) Like I said earlier, I like to be able to thrash a Civ if I have to, but I dont really go looking for it.

I agree, RX, but I do play for points...more than the last game I played. As long as I'm improving (and enjoying the game) I couldn't care less that others beat my score 3 times over.

one fo the keys to winning a war is in having the same or better units as your enemies, having the resources to build them, and keeping up(through any means possible) with the tech of the time. it does'nt help to have an entire continent to yourself if your an enitre age behind your enemies. also resources are extremely important a game i played a few days ago i was fighting egypt and winning tell they destroyed my iron then i was losing just as hordes of swordsman were reachign my main bases i got iron back and started massing legion and then egypt wasent around any more:)

You do? I read a question (on civ3.com) that a player was complaining in Civ2 that everybody wanted to declare war when that player's borders expanded and could you (Firaxis) please fix that? The answer was that they would somehow include that in Civ3.

Warring is a proven, fun, rewarding, and very popular approach, but - it's a commonly-held misconception that only warmonger styles of play work with Civ 3.

Contrary to the myth, Monarch can be beaten almost every time without ever declaring war, and on Regent it's possible to win almost every time without even firing a shot.

If anyone wants to see detailed Monarch/Regent peace strats for Pangea and Island standard maps, I can post them.

Sounds quite like my playstyle on Monarch. The few times I want to wipe a Civ out include bad-neighbour-Bismark on non-pangea - or maybe to eliminate a small civ that attacked me coming up to Fission (and the diplowin) - but that's rare.

Thing is, if I ever do take down a neighbour early on, the FP-powered dual core-civ is so strong it's practically game over. If you stay a single-core civ, the challenge remains for longer.

Having got the hang of Monarch peace-play, I've considered switching to Emperor wargaming for a change, but keep going back to perfect my peace-strats - I just can't resist playing that trading screen!
