Make the Game Run Quicker?? HELP!!

OK - I am new to all this and absoultely love Civ 3. I have been playing for about 3 weeks now and it runs well on my system, problem is, in between turns, it takes a long time (20-30 seconds) Is this normal?

I run on a PIII 450 with a 10GB hard drive and 320 RAM.

Any ideas?

20-30 seconds is very fast, mine is growing to 5 minutes, it was bigger but i gained some speed with making the pagfile very small (64 mb, i have 768 mb onboard) divided in to two segments which are on partitions who don't have an OS installed. Maybe its even better to make it smaller and/or divide it into 4 segments. I'll try it tomorrow

Three things to try:

1) Apply the patch.

2) Turn off enemy unit animations.

3) Play on a smaller map / fewer opponents.
