Making the Late Game Interesting

After the Modern Era, CiV starts to get bland and overall less interesting. If you have a huge lead, this is even more true. I think that Scientific Diffusion should be a top priority to keep the game close and way more fun. Maybe even in the later eras (or maybe post-internet wonder?) the rate at which science diffuses should be increased.

As a quick proposal, perhaps for each tile of an opposing Civ that one of your tiles touches you gain 1% of their scientific output, and vice versa. Spies would increase the rate at which science diffuses, as would research agreements.

I have no clue how hard this would be to program. Any other suggestions for the modders?
