Making upgrades for Explorer unit

I would like to make a mod wich adds upgrades to the explorer. My first question is which files I have to edit to achieve this. I already know about the file that contains all upgrades but I am missing art defines and similar things.

There's a mod which does precisely that out there already, but if you're still interested in creating your own, you can probably dig into its files to see how it was made.
