Has anyone made a utility to generate random maps? The civ map generator kinda sucks. All to often do I have games with masses of hills and mountains or dense patches of woodland. On top of that it likes to throw around a sprinkling of oddly place tundra and desert land. ARGHH! Just once in a game would I like some freedom of movement. Even when I customize the world I will more than often get a load of crap. Has the map generator been refined in other versions of civ like CIC, FW, MGE ?

The quandry for me in starting on a random map is whether or not I should give it a peek just to see if I'm miserably placed. Peeking saves one from a disgusted quit, but spoils the suspense. You're right, Vengeance, a better utility ought to be. There aren't any programs that do this. However, there is the human utility of creating maps or screening the random ones. If someone else does it, the map is "random" to you, and likely to be playable. Try one of these Balanced Random Maps and please add your own to the list if you like this idea.

I think that is also in our Download section, but I can't seem to get that section to load at the moment to check. :( It also has a preview mode without being too detailed, so you can see if it looks plausible. It also has good control of the nitnoid variables that affect land, sea, rivers, etc.!

Lovely. The coastlines are very crinkly. The features allow one to generate realistic looking maps. Now to learn if they're playable...
