Map size, edge of the world bug?

I just bought Civ4 last week, and installed it with all the patches (up to 1.52). I have a system that should be fast enough (Athalon 2.4, Radeon 9800 GPU, 1.5 gigs of ram). The game loads and runs correctly, but the size of the map seems off. The standard map isn't very big, and when I get to the 'edge' of the world, I can't go any father. Even the huge map isn't very big, and the edge of the world thing is odd. Is this the way it should work?

I've been playing Civ since Civ 1 back in the 90s, and the map seems off. If it's a smaller game map by design, that is fine, but it's odd when I can't see more then 4 civs being able to grow in a standard map.

Thanks,
Erick

It's possible you may have chosen a map type that doesn't 'wrap' around the world e.g. a Lakes map. In these cases you will find hard edges to the left and right, all quite normal.

Try a Pangaea or continents map, you can definitely circle the globe on those. in fact, you can zoom right out and rotate the whole globe on your screen, which is pretty cool, especially when the whole map has been revealed.

I have actually noticed a bug, though, related to panning your view to the edge of the world on some maps. Try running your 'camera' up and down the left or right border of some maps ... it is actually possible to see two or three squares into the other side of the map ... terrain you haven't explored yet! On the maps where I found this bug, there was mostly ocean but also some small islands ... I could explore without exploring! In a limited way, anyway ...
