I was thinking about finishing a mod I started in Civ4, and when I tried to load the map I created there in the new Worldbuilder I was informed that it was too large. Worldbuilder seems to have a limit of 128 wide by 80 tall maps. For this mod I was expecting to have much less activity than a normal civ game, and I felt I could use a larger map without too much trouble.

Specifically, I wanted a map that is tall rather than wide, but if I make the map 80 tall, making it thinner gives the map alot less resolution than I wanted. If I could make it 128 tall and 80 wide, that would be fine although smaller than my Civ4 version. (EDIT: Never mind! it appears that Civ5 cannot handle maps that are taller than they are wide even if they are small! why?????)

Does anyone know if this limit can be changed? I'd like performance issues to be left up to me for my own mods. I think it's horribly misguided to railroad modders into parameters that Firaxis assumes are 'sane' and 'safe'. I'm used to breaking things. If I wanna melt my graphics card with a 512x512 map then let me for chrissakes.

Ugh, leave to me to immediately find out what reasonable mod ideas are impossible...

After looking at the Terra.lua map script, it's huge size is 156, 96. So what's the deal with Worldbuilder???? I want an update... yesterday!

K, after some tinkering around with Terra.lua, I discovered two things. My computer can't handle large and huge size Terra maps at 128x80 and 156x96 respectively. Good to know!

The second thing I discovered is if you make a tall map with a map script, the top part of the map looks really, really bad. I think that is extremely unfortunate. If you want to make a western front scenario or something you can't make a tall map! I'd really like to see that changed.

I also would like to see someone buy me a computer that can handle a large map... jk.
