well, I guess that happens because the AI faces the game as a technological "wacky" race...it seems that all of other civs investment is towards scientific research unlike what happened in real History...that's why you're able to build nukes by 1600 AD or sooner...I'd love to hold almost-endless conflicts with other civs but by the time I complete a fairly sized army of knights to conquer the enemy cities I already discovered Mililtary Tactics and I'm forced to upgrade the knights to cavalries, so, most times I'm unable to enjoy a ancient-world war.
All because techologies are discovered very fast, almost non-stop, at an outstanding rate, and they are always the first priority...I suppose a rival civ can be loosing its cities turn after turn but its priority will still be scientific research...
