One way to ensure that you get the maximum bang for your buck when trading resources for cash is to first setup the initial deal for whatever amount of gpt. Then monitor every so often how much gold they have available under the F4 resources screen, and when they have some extra gold, you can cancel your deal (after 10 turns of the original) and then setup the new deal asking for that extra gpt. Unless something has happened to affect them liking you, they should take the new deal, and you are sitting happy with a few extra gpt. If you do this to a number of trading partners, you can continuosly build your gpt while slowly eating away at those of your opponents.

Another good tip when trading techs is lets say thay come to you with an offer

Tech+some cash for a tech

Always ask to negotiate and if they don't have anything else to offer and you can't give them less yourself just hit the AIs gold offer followed by the "What would make this deal work?" button and they may offer you a larger amount of gold

Very good tip Batho by the way.

Also be careful they haven't acquired the resource themselves. They will often times keep a deal alive well after they hook a resource up themselves, but once you cancel you've lost that deal.

I've been doing this a while, and one negative I noticed is that I think you get a lot more AI requests to stop trading with their enemies... I'm not positive it does this, but I noticed that it usually happened shortly after I re-initiate the trade with them.

The system may be designed so that you get a "-X you traded with our worst enemeies" everytime you initiate a new trade. It is this way with war. For example, if the Incas are friendly with the French and I attack the French once and remain in a drawn out war for 100 turns, then i should just get "-1 you declared war on our friends". However, if I declare peace after a few turns and then attack again as soon as peace is up and then declare peace again and attack again. I should have at least "-3 you declared war on our friends". The trade system may operate like this.
