When to my surprise i was allowed to upgrade my Battering Ram to a Medic I couldn't find any data about using these. I put mine next to damaged units and selected said unit to fortify until healed.

So do they heal units adjacent? Not immediate i noticed. So maybe faster?
Can they heal damaged settlements?
Or anything else I have not mentioned? Any info appreciated.

It increases healing of adjacent units.

Not hugely needed against the bad combat AI, but I suppose it can be useful if you can be bothered to move it to the right places.

Thanks Arte. Confirmed what i expected.

One of the recent patches changed the upgrade path of battering rams, and made them obsolete at some point (I think Steel/Urban defenses?) I find them too slow to be that useful. It's just another unit to move around.

Wait, battering rams eventually upgrade to medics? I've never kept one around long enough to do that. Weird upgrade path.

I think siege towers do as well. It's because they both get obsolete, and they are a support unit as well. And now with R&F medics will upgrade to a supply convoy.
Military engineers can stay around though to build missile silos.

OK I want to know - honestly has anyone ever actually used a medic???? :mischief:

I forgot they existed until I say this topic.

I've upgraded to them, but I'm not sure I actually used them. I usually just keep them stationed at home. As I mentioned above, they can be slow, and tough to keep up with your army, not to mention they come too late after most warfare is already over and done with.

A largely useless unit. I'd rather have a medic promotion for infantry.

Oh joy - and now with R&F we'll get Supply Convoys. Why, just why?

For that matter I don't understand why there are separate Military Engineers. It would have made so much more sense to just let builders create forts and roads instead.

Never even seen a medic in 500 hours. I might upgrade my first ever battering ram in the current game though.

What do they do? Give an extra attack or something?

I gotta say the support units in this game are largely a failure. Basic warfare in Civ6 is not at a level where you need to try to make it fancier by these support units.

I think they are supposed to act like a medic but faster movement and units in formation with them move at their speed. I might be wrong though.

Yes I have used them. But only one in any game. Units around them seem to heal faster if they use the fortify until healed option. It took one turn for a unit in the yellow to heal back to full green once with the medic on same tile. I had a battering ram that was obsolete so upgraded to medic and tried it.

The military engineers are good for building airstrips and missile silos, which I've used several times. I've never built a fort, and only once used for roads.

I built a couple medics when the game first came out, and I've certainly upgraded rams into them. I agree that they're too slow too weak to be useful in most situations. At a minimum I feel like they should give the bonus without having to fortify, so that the unit could attack and heal +5 before the enemy's turn. It might be fun to have a mod that moved the movement bonus in the light cavalry promotion tree up to tier 3 or even 2. That would make it a whole lot more fun to use support units.

Like Helicopters are actually driven by Cavalries, Medics are people from former battering rams and siege towers. They just use the battering rams as fireline-hospitals and use people who operate battering rams try to heal wounded?

Makes me think we should have a MASH unit. :) I used to love that show as a kid. But yeah, with the advent of helicopters the most seriously wounded can be evacuated quickly to surgical hospitals. So it makes a little more sense to have a faster unit in modern times.

But honestly, I'm not likely to use them even if they are faster. I find the healing times aren't bad. I conquer a city, wait a couple of turns healing up, conquer another, rinse and repeat. I'd rather keep that at home in case the AI ever invades with a massive force, I know it would never happen, but I like to be prepared. :)

I think these separate and important units in war are a very interesting add on. The truth is war is an intricate and complicated puppy. And Civ 6 is also intricate and complicated.

They are doing a great job of making choices fun. And also making conquering harder. Well once the Ai starts upgrading units and get a little better at least.

But imagine the Ai using bombers etc. You might need those medics.

I've also had the great person who acts as a medic, or occasionally been stuck with that promo on an apostle before. It can be nice to basically let your troops heal up a turn or so quicker before getting back to the action, but I'd agree they would be much more useful if they just provided a flat 5 healing to all units even if they had moved.
