Medieval Modpack V for Warlords

Hey, Wes! This is Rosacrux from the .Org forums (used to be, at least) an avid fan of your Medmod for MTW - and damn, Rome TW really lacked a medmod... many mods, but none as WesW's super-balancer and enhancer. When I get Warlords, I'll give your mod a thorough look. Keep up the good work.

P.S. you never got hoocked up on RTW, huh? Too bad... maybe we can lure you into M2-TW once it's out? :)

Hi Wes,

The kids are doing great. My son is now 5 and my daughter is now 10. We are currently going through fighting breast cancer with my wife. She has finished Chemo and is now in the middle of her radiation regime. I am confident things will work out well with her though. Once we get through these tough times things will smooth out.

As to the goods mod, there are a couple of things I notice. The biggest problem I see is keeping people happy on the higher levels. That is where the goods come in. With more luxury goods available on the map, it is possible to find a greater variety near you. You needs variety in your luxury goods rather than quanity to positively affect your cities. Also I like to play on arpegio maps and so it is harder to find luxuries.

Dale's combat mod is probably the biggest mod out there when it comes to changing how combat works in Civ IV. It also seems to work pretty well except for stacked combat in Warlords. For some reason, stacked combat still can lock up the game in Warlords, though from all I hear it works great in Civ IV Gold.

It was good to be getting back to you Wes. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Regards,

Timothy Pintello

The EB mod for Rome didn't work out? I consulted with them for a couple of months early last year, and I thought they were on the right path.
I played Rome unmodded for a few months, but CA had messed up the battles so much that I lost interest once the new features lost their shine. A classic case of unnecessary tampering. Then I tried to finish my own mod, and then the holiday games came out, and I never got back to Rome.
I fully plan on diving into M2, though it may be a while, since I am holding off on getting a new comp until Vista is out, and I seriously doubt my current rig will run M2.

My condolences on your wife's sickness, Timothy. I had a flashback to Don and his family's history when I read that.

Re: goods- I haven't had to worry about the higher levels, since I get about all I want at Prince right now. Since it looks like Blake's AI improvements are going to be included in the patch, I doubt I'll be moving up in levels anytime soon, either. (His thread is here.)
I don't think it would be good to mess up the middle levels for sake of making the harder ones a little less frustrating, but in the future I wouldn't be surprised to find that new additions have been added to the SDK or XML to enable buildings that could make use of those unused resources. ;)

Pete, that is why I need someone to help me out with the SDK. I would like to add the module referenced in that thread, and I would love to add Dale's mod to the game, sans the stack attack feature.

Well, it's coming along just fine, but it is... well.. at a snail pace. They got a working beta 0.74 (actually, a stable build without a few of the main features and lots of units) for several months out now, but they are still working on the planned 0.8... and it doesn't seem possible it comes out before M2.

Now those are great news indeed! Wes is back in TW!

Hi Wes,

Thanks for directing me to that thread over on Apollyton. Its actually been a while since I have been over there. That was a very informative thread and Blake is doing some really ground breaking work. Even Firaxis noticed and are going to use his stuff in their up coming Warlords Patch. I am very much looking forward to that.

It's unbelievable that they haven't finished EB by now. The main advice I gave them, 18 months ago, was to stop trying to implement everything all at once; to pick out and finish the features they thought were most important, so as to get something in the hands of the players, or else the contributors would lose interest in making it, and players would grow weary of waiting for it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I decided to check out the mods for Civ IV a few months back, I headed over to Poly like always, and couldn't figure out what was going on (or not going on, to be specific). (For those of you wondering, I hadn't been active in the civ-scene since the Spring of '02.)
I sent an email to Wouter (Locutus) asking what was up, and he filled me in on the decline of Apolyton and the rise of CivFanatics, and why it had happened.

Well, that's precisely what they did... NOT. They went for an all-out conversion (and it's a pretty impressive one, I might add, two steps above the next best mod, as it changes everything, gives a very historical feeling and such - it's slightly inbalanced towards powerful barbarians though) and it took them incredibly long time... the team appears to have been fully or partially refitted 3 or 4 times during the long wait...

They got 0.74 out for 6 months and they are snailing towards 0.8 right now (they got some beta testers the other day, so it should be out in a week or two... or three... before M2TW I think ;) ) The worst thing is can't play my favorite faction (Greek city-states) in their mod, because they haven't done several greek units and the ones they got now are hopelesly underpowered even against the weaker "barbarians"...

Hi Wes,

Out of curiosity, what did Locutus attribute the decline of Apollyton to? I never have heard that answer, I just stopped going there and came here instead.

Well, basically it was that Dan and Mark have entered new stages in their lives, and don't have the time they once did to invest in the site. IIRC, Dan was only 18 when he and Mark merged their sites, and Mark was only a couple of years older, meaning still in college.

Hi Wes,

Thank you for the answer. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I been a bit busy the last few days.
