I've been thinking of making a patch which upgrades MGE to ToT and wondered how many would be interested? I've actually already created the patch but am wondering if I should take the time to readjust all my web space to post it. Also for those who dislike the ToT graphics how do you like the screenshot?

EDIT: The patch only includes the original and Extended game not Lalande, Midgard, or the animated units for any of them.

I'd be interested.I always wanted to try this extended game stuff but have never seen a copy of ToT in stores anywhere.I've seen it given as a freebie in a number of web and magazine offers so I think we're ok there. The "patch" would be useless without a previously purchased version, yes?

Of course, I don't blatantly wish to pirate any Civ game but I feel these patches fall in a grey area ;) . Anyway for those who may want MGE graphics for ToT here's a zip with them. You need to unzip it into the Civ2ToT/original/ folder and also delete any .spr files you may have in the folder to get it to work. MGEgfx.zip

EDIT: Fixed the graphics so that the Cities.bmp displays correctly. Also I was obviously distracted yesterday, these are the original Civ2 graphics, not sure why I specified MGE graphics but they're the same either way. :crazyeye:

I would definately be interested, and have only wondered why it wasn't done sooner. Please do it!
Regarding piracy, if you don't ask around, nobody will care. Ever heard of "Don't ask, don't tell?" ;)

As a gaming site,we don't have that luxury. What individuals do with their web space is their business however.

This would not be pirate software.Merely an update to allready purchased software that is now unavailable.

What is the status of this proposal ?

No news since four months, does this mean it cannot be considered as an update ?

Yes it would be, and it already is. Each of the separate versions of civ2 were sold separately, and were not made available as a free official upgrade. So making it available for free is piracy, even if you already have an earlier version.

In other words, no matter how much money you spent on Civ2, if you haven't bought MGE, using the MGE patch is as illegal as any other kind of piracy. The same goes for a free ToT upgrade.

Furthermore, ToT is still very much available on the Internet. It's being sold as a $15 download at Trygames.com

I understand it's hard to find civ2, but that doesn't make it any less illegal (as with all other abandonware).

Then again, both Thunderfall and Cedric are aware of this already, so they obviously don't care...
:hmm: And I'd rather see people play ToT than the inferior MGE...

My gods that almost sounds like Mercator would be in favour of this patch. Anyway as few people seemed interested in the update at the time (I think there were 2 positive votes) I didn't feel inclined to rearrange my site to provide space for it. So unless some huge surge of people suddenly want to play ToT it'll have to wait till I get my own domain, which in all likelyhood won't be till some time next year.

:D :cringe: Ditch the MGE patch, and make the ToT patch available instead... (you didn't hear that from me :cute: :hmm: ).

I might actually do that, if I got enough responses to show an interest. Maybe TF would think about doing a main page poll for it....

I haven't responded to the poll (this is the first I've seen it, though) -- but I am minorly intertested in the ToT version. I've purchased a few civ II classic versions (2.40 & 2.42) and may have a third as well as my purchased copy of MGE.

If I can find ToT for a reasonable price (with little effort) I'll go ahead & get it.
