Microsoft Outlook - autoreply function

I'm trying to set up an autoreply function for someone who uses Microsoft Outlook (not Express). Apparently it relies on Microsoft Exchange Server to function, so that it tells the server to provide a certain autoreply while marked as such for all incoming emails.

As far as I can tell this computer is not accessing MS Exchange, when checking the Exchange connection there is none listed. If the ISP supports it, will it automatically connect to MS Exchange? Or do certain things need to be set up in Outlook for it to connect?
 
Are you trying to set up an out-of-office reply?

You could set up a Rules Wizard to reply with a template if certain people reply.
 
Umm.. it needs to set up the autoreply when the computer is turned off, thus I figure it needs the MS Exchange Server thingy?
 
Yeah, that would be a server side function.

If the mail server is running exchange then you can set up an out-of-office type reply. But if it's not I don't think you can do that through outlook. If there's a webmail interface you might be able to set it up, but without knowing what it is I couldn't say for sure.
 
Do you know if I need to do anything special to make Outlook recognize that the ISP is running Exchange, or does it just configure that automatically?
 
I believe if you connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server when you create the Outlook settings, then you can set this up. But if you're connecting via POP3, then you'd have to come up with another method.
 
Is it common for ISPs to support Exchange? I've never come across it before so I don't know where to get connected to an Exchange server..
