Im getting huge negative modifiers to my military cap due to empire size. Is this because my empire is too big or too small?

Is is due to number of cities or pop size or both?

Im going domination vic and need more units.

Ive got -25 military supplt due to tech level. -21 due to empire size.

Help me create a hunnic hoard and conquer the world!

You get a supply cap penalty for every settled/annexed city, this is a rather recent change so you need to puppet more and early barracks is prio if you expand a lot early on.
At times this makes great generals/citadels very valuable.

Yep ive been pivoting to this very recomendation. Basically wide is being nerfed?

Ive done some tests and while pop does increase this empire size modifier it seems the increased supppy due to pop surpasses it.

So its odd that a tall tradition civ actually has a higher military cap than a wide warmonger.

Even with teocallis, my buddy as tradition is on par with me.

Wait no. With 6 cities hes got 46 military cap.

Ive got 10 cities 38 military cap with teocalis in every city. Without teocalis id be ar 28?

if it was on par with me I might be ok with it. But how is a warmonger going to conquer a tradition neighbor who has a substantially larger army?

This seems off to me but am welcome to something im missing.

I recently played a few games as Spain (Emperor) where I went Authority -> Fealty -> Imperialism -> Autocracy with 40+ Cities and without any puppets and I think the Supply Cap situation was okay. There is definitely a squeeze in the early game but the 5 free Supply from Authority help a lot with that. I definitely prefer the current balance over the one a few versions previously where the Supply Cap was a very theoretical consideration past a certain point. The only thing I dislike is that I think that the penalties for going over the Supply Cap are a bit too harsh. I would prefer if they were less general and more targeted at the efficiency of Units. So for example a debuff to CS or a penalty to Unit Production and Healing.

You cant JUST go wide, you have to focus a lot on buildings that provide supply (barracks line, walls line, harbour, stable) try grab all you can, or try war with small army.
Its a slight buff for autocracy since conscripted units does not take up supply (this is lost on upgrade).

I got all the buildings that buff supply. I wonder if im missing something else. Just seems odd for a tall tradition civ to have a fairly strong military unit advantage over a warmonger civ.

I will continue playing warmongers and see if this is actually a problem or not.

Population matters. You can't neglect to grow your many cities and expect to have more supply than a Tradition player.
