Not pandering, pondering... :p

If this has been discussed before, I apologize...

Does anyone know how many troops a single unit represents? Obviously a single rifleman unit is not actually 3 (or 1 depending on your settings) soldiers. This is more of a curiosity thing on my party. I always thought of them as a battalion, since that seems like the smallest you would realistically group units into.

Also, is there still an option to rename units? I'm such a geek. In CIV 3 I would name my ships, and name the units along the lines of 1 ID 3rd Recon or 1st Cavalry 5th Division....... :mischief:

I'm a geek! I stated that already.... :crazyeye:

i don't think they represent any actual amount. you can rename your units by clicking on its name in the bottom left. you can also add landmarks by pressing alt-s.

firstly yes you can rename your units by clicking on the name of the unit on the bottom left of the screen were all of the units in a stack are listed. i only rename units from the industrial age on so im sort of a geek to!

I think a unit represent approx. a regmient in size. i.e around 5000 men.

OMFG I love you people... You should see the big sloppy kisses I am putting on my computer screen right now. Quiet disturbing!

edit: the sloppy kisses are for you teaching me how to change the names...

I think the size of units changes over time, increasing from the initial disorganized warbands of a few dozen guys with clubs (warriors) up to divisions of 5000-20000 men (depending on organization) for modern units. And while an ancient unit like spearmen might really be entirely guys with spears, as you get more modern you'd have more variety in what's really inside of the units, an 'infantry' would have a lot different troop types incorporated (some artillery for firepower, some kind of light armor for scouting, some SAMs even in a vanilla infantry unit, some antitank guns, and so on) and would go through little upgrades not represented in the game as time goes on 'infantry' would start as WWI soldiers with bolt-action rifles and few if any machine guns, and gradually move on to be WW2 and after infantry with semiautomatic or automatic guns, machine guns at the squad or platoon level, etc. (the model for infantry is a US WWII infantryman).

Somewhere there's a thread with how many men civilization uses per unit to calculate the 'number of soliders' in demographics.

that would make huge warrior armies, i dont think the largest ancient army surpased like 50000 total

mayb like 500 pregunpowder, 100 gunpowder, 5 tanks, 5 helicopters

thats per unit that is

Divide your soldier count from demographics by the total number of military units you have (use the military advisor). Keep doing this at different stages (ie, different eras) of the game to see if the size changes.

True. I guess going into the World builder and do it properly would be the best way. Create a number of same units. Check the demographics. Then do it all again for the next unit. Keep comparing the units that should be different (like longbowman to tanks) to see if there is any consistancy or pattern in the numbers. After a while a formula will emerge.

Don't thank me, thank Robi_D. He must have gone through a ridiculous amount of trouble to get all of that info about the demog screen. A very much appreciated effort, though. :goodjob:

Yeah, I'll say. It's incredibly detailed. It's amazing how much insight into the other civs you can get with the demographics, once you know where the values come from.

You do deserve a thanks though because I would have never found it otherwise. ;) Actually, it never even occured to me that someone had researched it. It certainly never occured to me that someone knew *that* much about it, that's for sure!
