Mine fields, land and sea

I was thinking about Mine Fields for land and sea? Have a combat-engineer unit able to lay mines in land for tracked units (mainly tanks) and maybe give the Destroyers the ability to lay mines in sea? Each unit would only be able to lay mines in maybe 3 titles max?

And laying them would be like a build option? And removing them (or picking up enemy mines) like how the remove peatbog function works? (sorry I dont know how to mod, so sorry if I am not using the right terms)

Combat Engineer:

-Can heal tracked units fast
-Can lay mines (anti infantry or anti tank?)
-Can pic up mines (detect mines?)
-Bonus when attacking if your attacking troops are on the same title, againist forts/bunkers

Destroyer: (Or mine ship? Or Mine sweeper?)

-Can lay mines (anti ship or anti submarine?)
-Lay submarine net (they used them in world war 2, specialy in pearl harbor)
-Can detect submarine net / mines
-Bonus durning an amphibious assault?

So I think this would be a cool idea, what do you guys think? Can it be done?

And sorry if I seem to throw alot at you guys, seeing how I dont mod my self, I dont want to seem like a demanding jerk , I am just a huge fan putting ideas out there.

Those are some nice ideas, I would imagine it to be fairly easy to code too. If I didn't have a lot going already I could probably do this, but with college going it's a lot harder to find time to mod. Though I'm pretty sure Vincentz, Afforess or Jooyo might be willing to do this too

I could do it, if you would like. I think this is how I would tackle it, but I'll see if anyone else has 2cents to throw in. Mines would be defensive only, no movement units. You could have various levels of mines. Early minefields would be primitive and easy to spot. Sea mines would start as basic barrels of oil strapped to a motion detonator, and as time progressed would become heavily fortified invisible highly damaging mines. while IED's would be cheap and weak, but easily spreadable mines. Late game minefields would be invisible until you ran into them and be more devastating.

Well, enough theorizing. I see a few potential problems, but I'm sure we can overcome them.

Mines would have to be a unit. Making it a feature like peatbog breaks forests and ruins improvements. There is no other way to do it.

How can a unit build another unit? If a Destroyer places a mine, it would have to be a mine-unit, but no current function exists for that.

Other than that, I don't see any real problems. Any suggestions from other modders?

The other way you could get around it, is build the mines in the city, and have them able to be loaded into a "Mine-layer".

So while the mine has a movement of 0, it can "load" and "unload" thus being delivered to it's location.

Slightly more realistic that way, too :)

Other thoughts - low damage mines should build faster than 1/turn. Not sure how to get around that, but the effect is there in the FFH Source code ("Warrens" building).

Also if you decide to have it created by mine-layer unit, the FFH Crew have clearly worked out how to make one unit create another with their mages casting Summons. That code should be relatively easy to find, and once implemented into a DLL opens up all sorts of ModMod possibilities (like ships firing missiles that they create, submarines firing torpedos, etc).

The AI will not use Land Transports ATM, because of code limitations, there is a work in progress to fix this, but until it is done, this is not an option...

Easy fix, I just need to merge in the multiple production mod.

I didn't know about this, I'll go look into it.

So units could creat the mines then? (sorry if I miss-read that?)

Not yet, but I may be appear to impliment it. I'll see. I just finished merging in the Multiple Production mod, which has been on my todo list for ages, but I never had a real reason until now.

Before I move forward on this modmod, I need Unit Graphics for Mines. I really can't do anything without them. Are there any graphic artists on this forum?

I have Google Sketch Up? I am not a pro-modeler, but I know how to use it? But I dont think it can export to anything useful. I am also well versed in Illistrator and Photoshop? Just wondering if I can be of any help?

there are seamines in the download area.

Link Please?

I know there is a way to export google sketchup files to civ4 formats, but it takes work...

Yea, we did find a way to do that for Star Wars Empire at War, to get it to ALO format. And we did get one or too models I made in game, but the mod got cancled lol. However it can be done, I do know that.... so you know, I could try?

No, those are fine. Much better than I could come up with. (I'm a terrible, terrible artist. Any of my artwork in my modmod's is stolen...er...used from the CFC Download Database, or Google Images...) Now, iyou need to figure out how to change them into .dds and .nif files.

I am 99% sure that some one that it works like this: (this is how we did it for empire at war)

-I send the models to someone with Google sketch up pro.
-That person (with Google sketch up pro) exports it to 3ds format (for 3-D max)
-Anyone with 3-D max exports it to any fromat you want. (.dds & .nif)

And/or it would be nice to give them better textures once they are in the new format, and maybe Google Sketch up Pro could export in .dds or .nif ?

Anyone is Google Sketch Up Pro please help? And if you dont have it, then please ask around.

I like the idea - It gives a whole new element to the game.

I have a question and a proposal.

What about helicopter units? They are DOMAIN_LAND units AFAIK, but will the mine units engage them? Because I think the helicopters would fly over the mines - both land and sea. :crazyeye:

How about a "Band all (Land)Mines"- UN resolution? It does exist, but far from all countries as ratified it. It should work the same way as the No-Nukes resolution, just with the mines instead. It could be either land or/and sea mines.

Thats also a cool idea, but now after I make a few more models, ill get sketch up pro, and export the mines, and my rocket (for space programs, see my Space Programs thread). Becuase the trial for sketch up pro only lasts 8 hours. I want to make a few more models before then.

However I do believe we still need someone with 3-D max..?

Don't forget that we need to steal explosion effects from somewhere and add them in 3d Max.

Right! Seeing in I have no idea how to mod, I will do my best to get them in the right formats, and i'll let you guys do the rest lol, I dont want to mess anything up.

My Export list:
-Anti Infantry Mines
-Anti Tank Mines
-Cargo Rocket (see space program thread for pictures)

Work in progress:
-1 or 2 more space rockets
-I.E.D. (for the this thread)
