MOD help!

can someone tell me how to use a mod for civ4? i dnt knw how. I assumed i jsut put the mod in the MOD folder. I tried that with the carthigan mod but it says XML error when i loaded it. then when i went to the game menu, i dnt knw where to find it. help!

All of the mods that I have are in subfolders on the Mod Directory for the applicable game version (i.e., BtS mods are in the Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods directory). I then load the mod when I start the game.

Are you using a mod that supports the version of the game you are using including the patch level of the game? Some of the older mods may not be usable with the latest patches or if you have not patched your game you may also not be able to use the mod either.
