Greetings,

How can you mod or otherwise change a game already in progress?

Here is my situation: Playing the Americans on a HUGE map, 8 AI players. I went to Democracy as soon as I was able, even though I was spread over several continents, and became a very rich and cultured nation until the Japanese declared war. Fine. Went to war, beat the crap out of them for the first few turns, then tried to make peace. They never received my envoy...ever. I tried to let things calm down a few turns without making any agressive action. Nothing, I had to destroy their nation (20+ cities). To complete this campaign I had to go to Communism because I could not keep the people sufficiently happy. Argh.

The problem is now that the Japs are gone and I am at peace with the world once again, I am having to maintain all these cities! If I reduce science and luxuries to zero, I am still at a negative net income. The reason for this is the RAMPANT CORRUPTION!!! I am losing my shirt due to corruption. I am building courthouses like crazy (most pop rushed), but it is still too high.

I want to use a mod which reduces corruption but I do not think you can mod a game in progress.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

BTW - It really sucks that the Japs would not give up. I guess if I had nukes they might have surrendered. :D

With a fully productive & setup Democracy, switching to Monarchy would have probably been better because its corruption model is closer to that of Democracy (distance from capital & #cities).

By switching to Communism unprepared, I don't doubt you were screwed. In order to make Communist empires efficent, you need Courthouses & Police Stations in your cities. After this, they are pretty good, but until then, your corruption/waste will be pretty high.

I find it tough to understand that with 0% science & 0% luxury, you're still in the red under Communism. It has a large military support given your cities are large. Have you built Aqueducts & Hospitals to raise your free troops count? Are your citizens working & your tiles roaded?

Maintenance is a different consideration under Communism too. Since you can use Military Police to keep your citizens happy, you probably don't need Colosseums and Cathedrals. If your science is at 0, you don't need Research Labs & Universities. Save for the culture points for all the above.

I'd recommend sticking with your courthouse & police station building or going back to Monarchy or Republic.

Troop count is not the issue here, all the units are free. The problem is with corruption (over 2000 coin per turn!). This is a HUGE map, I have between 50 and 75 cities after conquering Russia and Japan, and am spread over multiple continents.

Argh!

You could post your save, I'll take a look.

You can't lose more money under corruption than you're making. So, if you're at 0% lux & sci then it has to be maintenance, unless you're shelling out gpt for trading.

Have you built marketplaces?

One thing you can do is go into the editor and add Reduces Corruption to other buildings, like Temples, Cathedrals etc. You can also adjust the number of optimal cities, though I'm not sure whether it will have an effect on a game in progress. I've never tried it myself. And there's a slight possibillity you may not be able to load your saved game again, though I doubt it.

You can edit the Civ3mod file and still load your savegame as long as you are not adding units, buildings, wonders or resources.

Also, you must not change the requirement to build a unit or building. Otherwise, changing other rules does not affect the loading of a savegame. ;)

Make sure you backup your Civ3mod before you do any of these or else you will never be able to play any unmodified games (such as GOTM or a succession game).
