Yet another Mod Potential thread by a modder, for modders.
1. Are they correctly categorized in the same class or assigning Field Cannons and Machineguns as 'Ranged' is dubious at best?
1.. Ranged class deals significant damage to any other land units but sucks against city (which 'Bombardment' parameters deal REAL damage particulalry a city with walls protectin' it). Machineguns may fit this definition better (despite that they appear abit late. they should appear in early modern era).. I can't remember that i've read somewhere saying between Ranged and Siege, who did more damage to ships but the conclusion said siege units sinks ship better. Field Cannon. mmmm, it can fire a solid cannonball that can still pierce thru a curtain wall but mortars and howitzers (which are siege artillery) shoots shells above these walls entirely. IRL field cannon can still do some siginificant damage to city fortifications but not as much as siege artillery as it turned out in Siege of Goodrich Castle. that... straight shooting cannons may not be a good siege weapon as it should. Medieval castle held by Royalist in English Civil War, against Renaissance Siege Warfare conducted by the Parliamentarians with cannons, theoretically the castle should fall with ease. but it didn't. This led to the Parliamentarian commander to commission a siege mortar from a local ironsmith, the said mortar is named Roaring Meg (a pun to a giant bombard Mons Meg of the late Medieval Era? Again Bombard (and associating techs required to make ones) is misplaced unit which I've spoke these lines several times and it is the first reasons I enter Modding Wulin but i ain't gonna say why it is misplaced. ), that lobbed shells into the castle with great success. eventually subjugated the defenders.
1.2 Ranged class has no default Zone of Control, A ranged unit has to be promoted (and it is a high level promotion!). This maybe true with field cannons (that requires a unit of Fusiliers to defend ones even if it can discharge scatter shots at advancing enemy column) but what about Machineguns? if a manned, supplied MG has no ZoC. how could MGs accounted for the WW1 western front stagnations and how could G.I. Joes ran scared at the intimidating roas of MG42?
2. What is a conclusion of the Item 1? Should there be a new class of the two different units (and different predecessors/successors in the respective class)?
A. Field Cannon with a new class Field Artillery. Predecessor is Ballista, Successors are Quick Firing Guns (the 75mm thing) / Trench Mortars
B. Machineguns assigned to a new class--Heavy Weapons. Have a default ZoC. Available with Replaceable Parts. Successor is Heavy Weapons.
C. Leave it as it. Firaxis got it rights.
