How do you tell when you need to update your mods?

With Civ6 and Workshop you can auto-update your mods. I can't see any similar mechanism for Civ7.

delete the old version and extract the new one.

make sure you don't have any duplicate .modinfo from a previous version, having the same mod ID in 2 places will create issues.

I think your best bet would be to "watch" the original thread where you got the mod. Until the Steam Workshop is added, the game won't have any way to know there is a new file available.

Since the modding is in the early days, I'd expect many updates over the next few weeks - you might just want to check daily.

ho, yes, I misread the question, sorry.

you can "watch" a resource too, I suppose this way you get a notification when an update is posted for that resource
