Mods crashing game

I have just recently started playing CIV 5 and I had a lot of problems with mods in BNW. Or, to be more precise, I can't manage to make any of them work.

First I tried the Ea mod and it never could finish loading the map, so I thought it was an issue between me and the mod. Then Faerun mod crashed while loading and I got more concerned. Now, when I try to check if other mods work, the situation gets even worse - 3 times now even clicking things in the mod selection screen causes the game to crash (the last time I managed to catch a glimpse of a "transferring" message displayed under the names of the mods before it crashed).

I have been clearing cache and ModUserData between tries. My PC is quite old, with Intel Core2Duo 2,66 GHz, 3.5 GB RAM and Windows XP. BuildID current version 294601 according to Steam. The game with no mods works just fine. Obviously I cannot include any saves, because I have none. :(

Update: I have updated my graphics card (GeForce 9600 GT) drivers and removed all mods other than ones I wanted to run (in this case - all parts of the Communitas mod) from the folder (which is something the instructions somewhere at this site tell you to do). When I entered the mod menu and started choosing the mods I wanted do play, the game seemingly detected that I don't have all the mods I subscribed to and tried to download them (the mods appeared again with a "transferring" text), after which the game crashed.

I therefore decided to unsubscribe all mods on Steam and then tried some mods by having them one at a time in the mods folder - and most of them work (and all of them load properly, which was not the case before). So it seems either Steam Workshop and its interaction with CiV is bugged or something's wrong with my Steam.
