Right, as the title says, are there mods for the GoG version of the game? From what I have so far looked, there are only for the unofficial patch, which is DOS only.

I would think that any would require careful study to see, if they worked with the 1.40 patch. If you have some mod you really like, I would think you could restore the install to the 1.31 patch and then apply it.

I do not even recall, if there are any mods for Moo2 as I never used any. The only thing needed to run Moo2 is Dosbox. All GoG did was set that up for you and patch it with 1.40. I would have preferred they not have put on any user mods/patch. Let the buyer decide that.

Sell all games the way they were and we can mod them or not.

I've been modding MOO2 on and off for the last year or two. See the thread here:

New Custom Mod for MOO2 http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=378278

I've since modded the game further, but have yet to upload the files as I am still testing it to make sure I didn't mess it up. That mod is highly unlikely to work with the GOG version because one of the tools I use to mod the game changes the game's exe file, ORION95.exe. The GOG version of the game runs off the hard drive, while exe in my game works with the game cd. Changing the GOG exe, or swapping it out with the ORION95 of my mod would cause the game to look for a cd, which would cause the game would crash, since the GOG version doesn't use a cd. Also, the fan designed mod program I use that mods the exe file is from more than 10 years ago and would probably mess up the GOG exe file if it was on that due to the changes made by GOG to made to that file.

But not all of what I modded in the game was part of the exe file. The racestuff.lbx file handles the race's attributes and the race picks for the custom generation of a player race. The herodata.lbx handles the attributes of the leaders. The mod's thread describes what I changed in these 2 files. These have been further changed in the newest version, but not very much. Adding these 2 modded files to a GOG version of the game probably would work, but don't forget to back up the original files so you don't lose them if you decide to give the modded files a try.

Orion95 does not work in Win7/8 64 bit. That is why GoG uses the Dos version. Having a CD would not matter as I have 2 CD's. IIRC the ini use to be able to force the game to run from the HD, as long as you did a full copy to the HD. Not sure, if that worked or not though. Many claimed it did.

Actually, Orion95 does work in Win 8 64bit. You just have to kill explorer.exe to get rid of the funky colors. Anyway, thanks for some of the suggestions.

It did not work for me in 7 or 8. I tried that solution, but did not work.

This works, I have this solution on my XP gaming machine.

The GoG version of the game is actually DOS only as well. They use DOS Box to run the game.

Best course of action? Install DOSBox, tweak your original MOO2, play it using DOS Box.

As for mods - you could give "Very Difficult Choice" Mod by Irakly a try. Does a great job for balancing the multiplayer games.
