I've been reading through these forums for several days and trying the various fixes to see if I can get the game to run reliably. I've been able to play it for up to an hour or so at a time, but I inevitably end up with either:

1. Graphics corruption - messed up fonts/pictures/texture, odd triangles protruding from the landscape, red outlines around the leaders in the movies -eventually resulting in dropping to the desktop or a reboot, or a hard lockup requiring reset.

2. No oddness or symptoms whatsoever, followed by dropping to desktop, reboot, or hard lockup requiring reset. I've not kept complete track of these, but my impression is that this often happens after ending a turn. However that isn't always the case.

Before I go into details, I also have had odd issues with sound that I've not heard anyone else mention. Sometimes the sound will just turn off and will remain off for a few turns, then it will turn back on for a few turns. I've quit the game while the sound is off, and the speaker icon in the lower right icon tray shows that the sound is muted. If I bring up the mixer, sure enough, "mute all" is checked. Unchecking this brings the sound back.

Otherwise, when the game works, it runs great. The map scrolls smoothly, the animations are good, the user interface is beautiful (this is one of the cleanest, well thought out interfaces I've seen) and it's just a pleasant experience.

So, let's start with my system specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394
Bios: F6 AWARD BIOS (this is the latest version)
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+ running at 1.4 GHz (exceeds minimum spec)
Memory: 1GB PC3200 (meets recommended spec)
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9700 Pro w/ 128MB (meets recommended spec)
Sound: Realtek AC’97 Audio: on motherboard (not sure if this meets “directx 9.0c compatible” spec, but all other games run fine)

Now I’ll address some of the concerns I’ve seen in other threads:

1. Update your drivers and firmware.

I can assert that everything is updated to the latest drivers, and that I’ve done this correctly. I in no way want to come across as arrogant, but I’ve seen the other threads where people are dismissed for complaining that there are bugs in this game and that those people “must have something set up incorrectly”. I’ve been a programmer for 20 years, and building computers for awhile as well. I can assure you that my computer is completely up to date with the latest of everything, including the “special” version of DirectX 9.0c from the Civ IV install.

2. Your graphics card is overheating.

No it’s not. I’ve checked the temperature after a crash and it’s well within the normal range. Also, just this morning I booted up the computer, started a game, and it crashed immediately. The card had no way of heating up to any dangerous level in that amount of time.

3. You need to change various settings in your configuration file.

Here are some of the various things I’ve tried:

- I didn’t have the “failed to initialize” error, but I tried unpacking the art files anyway.
- Disabled movies.
- Disabled sound.
- Ran in windowed mode (this makes things much worse for me)
- Already using a static sized swap file, but I increased it from 1GB to 1.5 GB
- Disabled Fast Write on the graphics card
- Changed AGP speed from 8x to 4x.
- Tried older versions of the ATI drivers – back to 5.7.
- edit: Cleared cache.
- edit: Disabled autosave.
- Other things I probably just don’t remember

I'll also mention that I purchased Call of Duty 2 on Saturday morning. I spent 3 hours Saturday, and 6 hours Sunday playing through the entire game and never had a single problem. This convinces me that I don’t have any driver problems, or overheating problems, or sound problems, or any other problems with my computer setup.

Am I missing anything? Is there anything else I can try? Am I just one of those dumb, non-technical people who doesn't know how to set things up right?

The point I’m trying to make here, by being as complete as I can in a reasonable amount of time, is that this game does indeed have one or more major issues. There are far too many people having problems for this to be written off with the “PCs aren’t consoles” argument. To those who dismiss me or others who are having problems with statements like: “you have to be technical to run PC games”, or “the game is fine, but you don’t have something set up right” - I can only respond with “STFU”. I’ve gone well beyond my responsibility as a customer.

This game has serious problems. I strongly suspect that the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of Take 2 Interactive. This would not be the first time Take 2 has screwed over developers by forcing a game out that wasn’t ready, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. I also suspect that they may be behind the silence from Firaxis as that is not without precedent as well.

Finally, Firaxis could go a long way in appeasing people if they’d just say something if they can. Anything – even if it’s as simple as “Yeah, it looks like there’s a problem. It didn’t happen on our machines during testing, but we’re looking into it.” All I want to know is that the problems are being looked at and a patch is forthcoming.

While I can't provide a solution to this problem, since I have the exact same problems as you, I'll still post here in the hope to seperate these issues from the various lag/performance/graphic corruption threads.

My system specs:

  • CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
  • board: ASUS K8V SE Deluxe, latest BIOS and Hyperion Pro 5.04
  • RAM: 1024MB
  • GPU: Sapphire Atlantis Advantage Radeon 9600 Pro, 128MB
    w/ Catalyst 5.10
  • German DVD version of Civ 4

Just like you mentioned, I have everything on the system up-to-date and running smoothly except for Civ 4. I installed the Radeon card just a few days ago, directly installed it with Catalyst 5.10, *did* install the special DX9 that came on the game's DVD, *did not* have any problems with the Radeon initialization issue, *do not* have a temperature, BIOS or other system issue, and finally do not have any issues with other games, applications or benchmarks.

After installing Civ 4 it ran beautifully and smoothly for two days, one day of normal usage (couple of hours), the second day the game was running in the background almost all day but I didn't actually play many turns.
Since yesterday the game suddenly started to either
  • crash to the desktop
  • crash and lock up my graphics card, keeping the PC running but the monitor on standby
  • directly making the screen go blank and the PC reboot
These things seem to happen apparently at random times, 10sec up until 45min into a loaded or new game, during or after a turn, during or after announcments or popups or movement.

Apart from that, I have sound issues, the wonder movies have their soundtrack turn on and off in 2sec intervals during playback and if I turn on the in-game music, it will stop playing after a few seconds (selecting a folder with MP3s in the Sound option screen works, though and plays them back flawlessly, even if you actually select the game soundtrack folder!).

As far as I can interpret the game's log files (I have turned on logging as described on the support page) there aren't any clear clues to errors other than these:

My computer's event log will show the ATI graphics driver entering an infinite loop (ati2mtag error entry in the system log) after a graphics card hangup or an unknown application error with no further info available in the case of the crashes to desktop.

The problem is that because of these random reboots I can't risk trying out any fiddling with the game's options for fear of slowly but constantly corrupting my system beyond hope...right now I can just sit around and wait for Firaxis to act.

Yours

Just wanted to chime in - I'm having CRASH problems as well. Funny thing is, the game ran fine for the first 2 days - I made it all the way to Scientific Method where it crashed and crashed HARD - monitor goes black, machine is off except for the light.

Now the damned game crashes *whenever* and does it a lot. I also have tried most if not all of the suggestions found here and on civ4.com. All to no avail.

When my machine is crashed, I have to hold the power botton in for several moments to power it the rest of the way off. I then end up crashing during re-boot like 2 or 3 times before I can get it to come all the way up - VERY FRUSTRATING.

I have activated the logging but there doesn't seem to be any indication of a problem when I read through them.

My game will sometimes crash during initialization and sometimes just out of the blue during play. I have auto-save OFF.

I switched my Radeon 9200 from AGP to OpenGL but that doesn't seem to have helped at all.

It really bugs me that it worked for 2 days of solid gaming and now it crashes constantly and there are ZERO indications as to WHY.

The game is beautiful and very engrossing, but I am wondering why I spent $50.00 on a game that has this many problems.

It's true, It's a great game.

My problem lies within the fact that it starts to show signs of shutting itself down or restarting the computer.

My computer is basically the Recommeded Specs you see on the box.

The signs it shows just before it breaks, sounds dies, text starts to go...(Cities name, production)... icons usually go the next turn. Then within 2 turns it's either restarted itself or returned me to the desktop.

-Disabled movies
- Everything set to low
- Tried updating my drivers, Anything that the site said could make it better... (Too a sense, there was improvement.)

yes, I agree with marius4143, this is not a to-be-released game. it's a beta!! they ask customers to pay $50 for a beta!! idiots!! like buying a car without an fully assembled engine! they should bring take 2 to court for cheating on customers.. like i said in some other topics, in europe there is a law:"if the producer does not sell you, what he promised you, you have always the right to bring it back to the producer, if he doesnt take it back, you bring him to court for lying about the product..penalties goes up to 20years of prison" now, software manufacturers are the only industry in the world which are free from this law! i wonder how much Bill Gates paid in Brussels to the EU to keep software out of this LAW, leaving customers unprotected! it's not my job as customer to find out the problem between hardware/software/OS...I paid for it damnit! you can't tell someone:"here you have a HiFi with all the resistors, transmittors, circuits, etc etc and then expect me to build the thing together without proper installation or troubleshooting guide" all products I buy I get a decend working product or i just bring it back..now, why can't i bring back civ??? I'd love to bring it back and just buy it AFTER it has gone GOLD!!! and not BEFORE it reaches FINAL-BETA...to me this games looks like BETA 2nd level..nothing more and nothing less
