Mouse problem

Ever since I installed PTW (or maybe it was a Civ3 patch, don't remember 100%) I've had an annoying problem. The special buttons on my mouse don't work in game! They work just fine outside the game... even when I play and press the Windows key to bring up the start bar they work fine. When I play any other game they work. Just not in Civ3. In vanilla Civ3 my special buttons worked.

This is annoying, since I usually use a single button for double clicking... does anyone have an idea what's going on?

What mouse do you have and what buttons are not working, and by not working what is the expected result vs. the actual result.

Logitech wireless optical MMX700 I think it's called...

Expected result for button in question : Doubleclick.
Actual result: Nothing.

Again, this happens only in Civ, no other applications..

O.K. do you have moseware drivers installed, if yes which one.

Also by double click I assume that you mean you have either your right or left mouse button set up to act as though a single click is indead a double click? Is this setting done using microsofts mouse control in it's control panel or through the mouseware drivers.

You said the special buttons used to work, at what point did they stop working, installed PTW or C3C, installed new mouse drivers, patched an exsiting version of a Civ III installation, etc..

Thanks for your replies :)

Mouseware version 9.78 is installed and working (latest version as far as I know).

This mouse has 7 buttons. One of the special buttons is configured to act as if a single click is actually a double click. The standard left and right buttons have standard functions.

These specially configured buttons used to work with the original version of Civ3. Quite some time ago, this ceased to be the case. It was certainly not C3C, could have been PTW, but more likely one of the Civ3 patches, don't remember exactly. This leads me to believe that something in Civ3 changed to cause this behaviour.

I wonder if anyone else has this problem.

Hmm.. come to think about it, I have an unpatched version of Civ3 beneath C3C now, I'm going to start it up and see what happens.

9.78 Is the latest version.

O.K. which button did you place the double click command on, and what is it that you are expecting the double click to do (Scroll up/down in unit stacks, open city screen when clicked on city)?

Ok, it's not working in regular civ either.

I have configured button 7 for doubleclicking (standard config for that button is continuous scroll down).

I'm expecting it the doubleclick to fill the same function as a doubleclick in the game (accepting in dialogs most importantly). For instance at Shift+D "Pick the civilization..." You can doubleclick one of the nations.

Hope this is clear :D

Alrighty, so I just looked into the problem that you are having with the double-click, and the problem is neither your fault nor is it Civ III's fault. The mouse is installed as an HID-compliant mouse, which will allow Microsoft to use its 'generic' mouse drivers to power all the buttons on the mouse and provide them with a form of basic functionality (every button but the quick switch {8} button). When a third party makes a driver set for the mouse they either need to replace the HID driver with one of their own drivers (doesn't happen), or they need to provide a complete driver. In the case of mouseware drivers there are significant problems in dealing with DirectX. Among others is the fact that when the mouseware software is used to alter the default values of an extra control button it incorrectly reports this information through the API to DirectX.

Short and skinny: the mouseware drivers are messed up, and will work erratically in anything that uses DirectX.

<Edit>

On the plus side, with the generic drivers the scroll up and scroll down buttons (4 and 7) will scroll up and down through the various lists in the game as long as they are held down. Very convienent for large stacks of units or underdeveloped cities.
