Movies for Civ'n

Hal Holbrook trumps all. :p

Ok - now I actually want to see it, because I haven't seen either of those flicks in about 30 years and I'm stuck in a country where they think "The Dambusters" is the pinnacle of war films.

Seriously though - what gets me in the mood for Civ is linked in my signature. Might go listen to a podcast or two right now.

offtopic: I have the same exact problem, I cannot hardly play civ4 anymore with all of the civ5 stuck in my head :)

ontopic:

History channel(s), Military channel, science channel sometimes, nat geo sometimes.

Pretty much any documentary that is about war or empires. It's funny I am actually quite a builder type player but the war documentaries always get me in the civn mood. I'm thinking a ww1 docu playing in the background while playing civ5 is the way I will go, get some fortified lines going in no mans land between borders.

That Art of War is good I watched it recently, totally civ'n. Back around the 4th of july there were alot of good docus on revolution and war of 1812 that are good stuff.

Movies are much harder to come up with for me... Glory with Mathew Broderick comes to mind, The Patriot mel gibson revolutionary war, ummm even Dances with Wolves gives me some weird civ'n with western expansion hehe. Some period pieces about royalty like Elizabeth kinda get there.

Thought of a few more movies:

  • Troy
  • Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
  • K19 Widowmaker
  • Eurotrip
  • History of the World Part 1
Also, I have, on loan from my father, Into the West (the miniseries about the western expansion of America). Pretty much any of the history documentaries as well.

The other day, I had to go install a program on a user's computer at work. While I was sitting at his desk, waiting for the program to install, I occupied myself by staring at a map of the world he had on his cubicle. I was just staring at it and looking for different countries, etc and imagining hexes covering the map. So, yeah, anytime I look at a map or atlas or encycolopedia, for that matter, I tend to think CIV!

Documentaries.. old but timeless.
World at war (9 dvds) - ww2
Civilization, A personal view by Kenneth Clark -- mostly about art
The Accent of man -- mostly tech and human evo devo

Yeah, I've actually got a few docs on DVD. The War of 1812 one, as well as a few on Rome, including Engineering an Empire. On a side note, I still think that the Colloseum should be a World Wonder with the Arena to replace it as a regular building. I just don't understand why they won't do that!

Well, I finally watched B&TEA this weekend and today I watched another time-traveling movie that makes me want to play Civ! The movie was The Final Countdown with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen (note... if they were to remake this movie, I swear, they could get Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen to play the roles that their fathers played and you would hardly tell the difference). If you haven't seen it, or have never heard about it, it is about the USS Nimitz goes back in time during a freak storm to Dec 1, 1941. Though it is more Sci-fi, this movie did get me thinking...

That just might be an interesting scenario! Imagine, playing a scenario where you control just The USS Nimitz, a Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier unit (which would have to be made specificly for this scenario) and you are in the Pacific just before the attack on PH. You have a few jet fighters (maybe increase the load to 6) and have to take on the entire Japanese Task Force who is readying to make their strike. Can you stop the entire fleet before it is too late and give the 1940 Americans a chance to group and make their counter strike?

To make it a little more intersting, an alternate version could give you a little more (which would actually deviate from the movie) and imagining that the Nimitz Battle Group arrived on seen. You would have two Destroyers, a Missle Cruiser and a Nuclear Submarine. Of course, things may have to be stepped up a bit... After you arrive on scene and take out the initial onslaught, you get a "base of operations" and become instant allies with the American Civ as you take it take on the rest of the Japanese fleet! The only additional units you can get is ones loaned to you from America...

Well, I think it could be interesting anyway! I'm sure that at least several people will shoot it down!

Master and Commander, Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia are the first three to come to mind. Also, props to the OP for including In Harm's Way. I love that movie.

Yes, In Harm's Way is an excellent movie! John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, Burgess Merideth... great cast!!! I also have to say that the story blew Pearl Harbor's story out of the water (no pun intended)!

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure - About half of the historical figures in the movie have been featured in Civ at some point. Genghis Kahn, Abe Lincoln, Napolean, Joan of Arc, Socrates... EXCELLENT!!!

I believe it's pronounced SO-krates...

That is all

"Inglorious bastards".

That's a perfect movie to get you in the mood for civ. Altering reality to impact the future course of mankind is ftw :goodjob:

Hmmm, good question. I really like the TV series Sharpe, especially for the napoleionic era, but the whle arse kicing aspect will really put me in the mood for some war mongering! :D

Otherwise, maybe playing the Total War series, but for its improved combat, it just makes me want to play Civ whilst playing lol.

10,000 BC
Gladiator
King Arthur (2004)
U571
Hunt for the Red October

Those are good ones to add to the list

I think the ultimate would be a marriage of the two (Full CIV game with Total War combat), but, sadly, only few would have the heart to play it! It would take an eternity!
