Hopefully, I just missed how this can already be done.

So we have a variety of repositories where Great Art can be stored. But Artifacts can ONLY be placed in Museums, which can house both Artifacts or Great Art. There are _significantly_ fewer Artifact slots available.

I raise this question because of the AI's autoplacement process. I built a Museum, with the intention of placing Artifacts there. But then I have a Great Artist appear and I use him to create a Great Painting -- which the AI promptly dumped into the Museum. That, despite the fact that there were already four other slots in other buildings where that painting could have been placed.

So, how do I take that painting out of the Museum and transfer it to Uffzi (where I wanted it to go in the first place)?

Click on the item you want to move. Click where you want it to go. If there is something in that slot the two items will switch.

You can put artifacts anywhere art can go. You just don't tend to benefit from theming bonuses, except in museums. The Louvre also requires two artifacts to get the maximum bonus but to my knowledge it is the only wonder that benefits from them beyond the base tourism and culture.

I think it's the "how" that the OP is looking for, not the "what" or "why".

There is no way to move Great Works/Artifacts around within the city screen. You need to do it within the dedicated "Culture" tab (or whatever it's called) on the main display screen. It should be sitting right next to the "Social Policies" tab. Click on the button, and it'll open up a window listing all of your Works/Artifacts and all possible repositories. From there it's pretty intuitive; just click once to pick up a Work and click again to place it in an empty slot (or switch with a Work in an occupied slot), as Octonde said. Mousing over unoccupied slots will give you a tooltip listing the requirements for a theming bonus, while current theming bonuses will be updated automatically.

Thank you all. It seemed intuitive to me that there _should_ be a method, but with no distinct manual to refer to.... I tried clicking-and-dragging, right-clicking, click here and then click there, but nothing seemed to be working. I'll give it another try when next I play.
