MS Word in French?

My mother asked me if it's possible to have Word operate in French, you know make spell check for French words and grammar.

They have the Swedish version of Word for windows 98 on their computer, and there you can change language from Swedish to English without problem so that the English spell checker kicks in, but when they try to do the same thing for French, it doesn't seem to work. I tried to do the same thing on my comp. with the same result. Nothing really happens when I set the language to French, no words get underlined at all, no matter what nonsense I write.

So, does anyone know how to change the language in Word to French?

EDIT: Oh, and if there is a way, assume that I'm a completely illiterate with computers when you explain to me how to do.

EDIT: There is not word 98 version that I know of, here is a link about a problem in Word 97 with some non-English languges though. The above link is for Word 2002 (also known as Word XP).
