I just bought civ 4 from direct 2 drive. After installing it i got the error MSVCR71.dll was missing. So i went and got it threw it in the system32 and WOW64 (since im using 64 bit windows)

After reinstalling it it now gives me;

Civilization4.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\system32\MSVCR71.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it containts an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

I am the admin, I have tried installing it many times, Ive even downloaded a C++ pack that might of had compatible .dll files in it. Still getting the same message. Can anyone help me?!? :sad:

I bought the game from Direct 2 Drive as well, let me say I am not happy at all. I bought Civ 4 and all the add ons and nothing works. Worst experience with a game I have ever had in my life. I am at over 5 hours now trying to get this PoS to work.

If I cant get it working by noon, going to stop payment via bank.

Could you be running 64-bit MSVCR71.DLL vs. 32-bit? Or Intel Xeon 64 bit vs. iPX-64? Otherwise "invalid image" strikes me as either a corrupted file or a potential malware infection.

Double check that you don't have bad copies of the DLL in your \Users\yourname\AppData\Local\VirtualStore folders (Program Files or Windows under this)...

I had the problem and this is how I resolved it....

Search your whole computer for the file MSVCR71.dll hopefully you'll find several copies of it in other programs and games.

Find the most recent version (date changed). Copy it from the source (don't cut it obviously) and paste in to the main firaxis\civ 4 folder.

Budda bing, it should now work.

A friend of mine just got Civ 4 through D2D and is running Windows 7 64. She had some problems getting it to work, too, but it's working now. I'm told that she had to put MSVCR71.dll into the Windows/system folder instead of the /system32 folder as she'd been advised.

Try putting it into Windows/system instead?
