multiplayer gold cheat?

First, two screenshots from an actual duel I played last night. These are from my point of view.

* Recovery save from when this first started (game appeared normal until then, and I didn't actually notice the gold until much later)

* Buying units like crazy:

I didn't do anything to cause this... the game began normally, I successfully slingshoted in 1950 BC, and then proceeded to play really crappy for awhile (I'd had a few beers if you must know)

But ~800 BC comes along, and the game begins to FLASH out of sync. I.e. OOS one second, not OOS the next, OOS the next second, you know the drill... So he (the host) paused and I reconnected. But the same thing happens again 1 minute later. So I pause, and he reconnects. Suddenly (though I don't notice for some time) I've breen magically given millions in gold.

It might have been a game fluke, but check out his score in the second screenshot. I think he was cheating, too...

Is it possible that something he did using a "debug console" I've heard rumors of somehow went wrong and gave me gold instead of him, and perhaps somehow related to the weird out of sync errors?

This is my first experience with something that looks like cheating in Civ4.... :(

Yes, he was probably cheating. Cheating tools (trainers) cause OOS because your computer doesn't understand where all that gold is coming from.

When you rejoined, you downloaded a copy of his hacked game, which solved the OOS.

Wow hacking multiplayer in Civ4.... hahaha thats the most pathetic thing I've heard in a long time...

I mean seiously... I hate people that hack in anyway, because I dont see the point in it...

its liek a game of chess wherer you say hmm instead of bishops and rooks, I'm gonna have extra Queens... sure the other fella might win (slim) but where is the thrill in the victory... your not playing on an even feild so any credit to your skill in a win went out the window...

you might as well let a computer play for you...

So when people say that the No Cheating Option in Multiplayer is bugged, is it really? Or are they just cheaters?

The No Cheating option covers game-allowed 'cheating', using worldbuilder and things like that, not hacks. Hacks by definition operate outside the settings of the game. A game setting cant stop all hacks, hacks will evolve in order to function around whatever game settings are in place.

Gamespy and Firaxis should do something about this hacking problem in future patches. The idea of someone giving himself a million golds just ruins the sense of fair play and fun in the game. It will be like a game of chess, and instead of 8 pawns and a queen, you decide to give yourself 9 queens, and the opponent has to play blindfolded. Here is my original post in the multiplayer section:

The "no cheating" option has no effect in multiplayer, since it only turns off worldbuilder and similar, which are deactivated anyway in multiplayer. However some people have reported it causing saved multiplayer games to be unloadable, so it should never be used in multiplayer. It does nothing, and may cause problems.

If your game goes out of sync, and you rejoin, the host can cheat to his heart's content.

Out of sync means something went wrong with the game engine, or someone cheated.
